N.Y. Times publisher says he told Trump that attacks on media could lead to violence

Source: WaPo

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — The publisher of the New York Times said Sunday that he recently warned President Trump that his attacks on journalists as the “enemy of the people” are contributing to a rise in threats and could lead to violence.

Trump revealed Sunday that he met at the White House with publisher A.G. Sulzberger and said they discussed “the vast amounts of Fake News.” The president said he explained to Sulzberger why he was increasingly characterizing journalists as the “enemy of the people.”

The president tweeted Sunday from his New Jersey golf estate, “Had a very good and interesting meeting at the White House with A.G. Sulzberger, Publisher of the New York Times. Spent much time talking about the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’ Sad!”

The tweet prompted Sulzberger to release details of their July 20 meeting, at which he was accompanied by James Bennet, the Times’s editorial page editor.

He's been told what the consequences of his behavior will be. He continues to do it. He's culpable for the outcome.

Released by NY Times in response to Trump tweets about the meeting on July 20.

" I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence. I repeatedly stressed that this is particularly true abroad, where the president's rhetoric is being used by some regimes to justify sweeping crackdowns on journalists.

I warned that it was putting lives at risk, that it was undermining the democratic ideals of our nation, and that it was eroding one of our country's greatest exports: a commitment to free speech and a free press.

Throughout the conversation I emphasized that if President Trump, like previous presidents, was upset with coverage of his administration he was of course free to tell the world. I made clear repeatedly that I was not asking for him to soften his attacks on The Times if he felt our coverage was unfair. Instead, I implored him to reconsider his broader attacks on journalism, which I believe are dangerous and harmful to our country."

All controlled by them now, or else they threaten them, and soon if he gets his DOTJ he'll criminalize them with it.

Now that Trump has told us about it, and used it to badger the press this morning....the press is now free to cover it at will.

New York Times Publisher Rebuts Trump’s Account of Private Meeting

By Mark Landler

July 29, 2018

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — President Trump on Sunday disclosed details of a private meeting he had with the publisher of The New York Times, A. G. Sulzberger, and Mr. Sulzberger flatly disputed the president’s characterization of an exchange they had about threats to journalism. Mr. Trump said on Twitter that he and Mr. Sulzberger had discussed “the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’ Sad!”

In a five-paragraph statement issued two hours after the tweet, Mr. Sulzberger said he had accepted Mr. Trump’s invitation for the July 20 meeting mainly to raise his concerns about his “deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric.”

“I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous,” said Mr. Sulzberger, who became publisher of The Times on Jan. 1. “I told him that although the phrase ‘fake news’ is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists ‘the enemy of the people,’” Mr. Sulzberger continued. “I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.”

<...>

In a statement, Mercedes Schlapp, a White House communications adviser, said, “The president regularly meets with members of the media, and we can confirm this meeting took place.” She did not provide any further details of the meeting or explain why the president chose to publicize it. The White House had requested that the meeting be kept off the record, according to the statement from The Times. “But with Mr. Trump’s tweet this morning,” the statement said, “he has put the meeting on the record, so A. G. has decided to respond to the president’s characterization of their conversation, based on detailed notes A. G. and James took.”

That's the way to corroborate the factual truth of what happened in a private meeting.

If you want a witness.

They always sent 2 or more lawyers, every single time they interacted w/ him. Because even lawyers who choose to work for him need a witness to every interaction with him, just to protect themselves. That's pretty extraordinary.

Dolt45 only respects someone who can bully him. Nevertheless I think it is a good thing that the NYT did this to put him on notice that if someone is hurt Cheeto can’t say he doesn’t know.

Cheeto does not respond normally with a fear of consequences. He lacks the intellectual and moral capital to calibrate his response. At the end of the day he is just a dumb thug. It still shocks me that he is POTUS.

Look for Twitler to step up his rants about the media and call out more and more individuals by name to his entire his base (and if anyone ever fit that term - base - it's his base) to act on his words. I'm surprised no one (as yet) has been murdered by these storm troopers.
