Civil Rights Groups Will Converge On Washington, D.C. To Protest White Supremacist Rally
Source: Think Progress
Black Lives Matter DC has announced it will hold a counter-protest against the White Civil Rights Rally planned for Sunday, August 12 near the White House.
After learning last month that the National Park Service had accepted a permit for the white supremacist rally, which is being organized by those responsible for the deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville last year, BLM organizers were left feeling frustrated, according to D.C.-based WTTG. The group decided to channel its disappointment into direct action, organizing its own rally to counter the narrative being pushed by the White Civil Rights demonstrators.
We are stronger than they are
they are resistant to change and to progress that Black Lives Matter has been doing over the last four years with black liberation and fighting racism and fascism, Makia Green of BLM DC told WTTG. So its important that we let D.C. and the rest of the world know that we are not going to stand for the hate.
Adding to the mounting anxiety surrounding the August 12 rally is the fact that it was deliberately scheduled on the one-year anniversary of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, during which one woman, Heather Heyer, was killed after a rally attendee drove his car into a group of counter-protesters...More...

Members from Black Lives Matter New York are also planning to march to D.C. that weekend to bring a wave of love. Our goal is not to confront them physically, but to create a wave of love around them, BLM NY leader Hawk Newsome said. On the current divisions in the country, he added, [We havent] gotten any closer to healing the racial divide in this country. If anything, we are further from it. We must come together and demand that each citizen take action to end hatred in all its forms.
Jason Kessler, head of 2017 Unite the Right protest & this years White Civil Rights demonstration said the rally has a new purpose: to speak out about what he claims was civil rights abuse & what took place at last years Unite the Right event was an infringement on the white supremacists constitutional right to peace. It wasnt the fault of my group that that stuff happened, "Were not able to peacefully assemble. Were not able to speak. This rally is not about opposing [minority groups]. This is about us. This is about white people & standing up for our rights.

(3,164 posts)Confrontation is EXACTLY what the white supremacists WANT.
Having 100,000 times as many people show up, loving and well behaved will be far more effective in diminishing the impact of the racists.
These racists *THRIVE* on people violently confronting them. If they are simply ignored while a massive rally propagates the opposite message, with good vibes and positive words, they lose in a way they never could if a bunch of us showed up with weapons, fists and feet and kicked the living shit out of every one of them. Gandhi and MLK knew exactly what they were doing.

(29,722 posts)Violence begets violence. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi showed the true way.
All beings want to be happy and none want to suffer. Work with that, knowing that ignorance is the basis for all suffering.

(1,058 posts)Gandhi clearly advocated non-violence, but the viability of non-violence as a means of political change really needs to be looked at in context to the alternatives. The British knew that holding a country the size of India indefinitely was a losing cause, and they had been putting down rebellions in one form or another since the East India Tea Company first started business there.
Gandhi provided a face saving way for the British to relinquish control of India. The alternative for the British was to violently put down the next rebellion. And the next. And the next. Ad infinitum. I could cynically argue that Gandhi was about as non-violent as the mobster walking into a shop and saying "Nice place you've got here. Be a shame if anything happened!" When you can get an entire country to do something non-violent, the message is not lost that you could also have an entire country do something violent.
In contrast, in South Africa, Gandhi had no leverage, and his non-violent opposition had very little tangible impact, other than perhaps serving as an inspiration to later generations of South Africans.
Note: I'm not suggesting that we need more violence in American politics today (we don't) or that violence is right (it's not), but I think it's misleading (and dangerous) to point to Gandhi as an example of non-violence being successful in isolation from context.

(29,722 posts)that was EXTREMELY effective only 50 years ago. Wee need to keep going. We stopped when Nixon finally fled Vietnam and the presidency. We should have kept going then; but we were young and stupid and thought that peace love and justice would prevail.

(3,164 posts)if 25 on our side went and mixed it up with them *AND*500K people peacefully demonstrated a block away, the media is going to cover the violence. and the footage of antifa and fascists clubbing each other is going to be a GREAT thing for the fascists. They will go with what has visual interest; and all most people will see is a bunch of funny dressed people trying to kick the shit out of each other. Any message will be lost; those of us who hate fascism and racism already do, some people will decide (wrongly) that both sides are violent out-of-control jerks, because all the will see is idiots hitting each other with clubs and garbage cans.
On the other hand, if what the media has is a group of 25-100 pathetic wankers speaking to no one and a few blocks a way hundreds of thousands of us holding signs about love, diversity, equality and forgiveness- the REAL difference between their philosophy and outs will be readily apparent.
Yeah, in my fantasies, butting boot to ass or steel pipe to face of some neo-Nazi fuckhead feels good; no argument. But a violent response is what they WANT. Hell, I bet there are contingency plans for agents provocateurs if we don't take the bait (and we should be ready for that, too; video of supposed Antifa being treated with gentleness and respect by the police after a phony arrest (someone once posted such here; and even the 'antifa' dudes shoes were exactly like the cop's boots!)or any other thing we can do to prove that the hate and violence are on their side, justice is on ours.

(1,414 posts)...just what rights are those KKK, Nazi, and Neoconfederate f*cks claiming are being infringed? Is it the amount of times people with pinkish hued skin are killed by police? Is it that people with pinkish hued skin are regularly "red-lined" when attempting to buy or rent a home? Or is it that people with pinkish hued skin are regularly paid less than their counterparts with brown hued skin? JUST WHAT RIGHTS ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT?!?

(100,104 posts)They say something racist or sexist, then there's an outcry. They claim "freeeeeeeeeeee speeeeeeeeeeeeeech!!!!" which is their constitutional right. And then when they get called out for being assholes, they retreat back to their screens and complain, get followers, wash, rinse, repeat.

(41,175 posts)- New Documentary Chronicles a Year of Reporting on Violent White Supremacists & Neo-Nazis, on Tues., Aug. 7, Documenting Hate: Charlottesville premieres on PBS, By ProPublica, July 25, 2018.
In Documenting Hate: Charlottesville, Frontline and ProPublica investigate the white supremacists and neo-Nazis involved in the 2017 Charlottesville Unite the Right rally. Our joint reporting has already shed new and troubling light on the events of Aug. 11 and 12, 2017- revealing that one participant in the violence, Vasillios Pistolis, was an active-duty Marine, and that another, Michael Miselis, worked for a major defense contractor and held a U.S. government security clearance.
Now, correspondent A.C. Thompson goes even deeper, showing how some of those behind the racist violence nearly one year ago went unpunished and continued to operate around the country. This is the first in a series of two Documenting Hate films from Frontline and ProPublica, with the second coming later this fall.
>Tune into the premiere on *PBS on Aug. 7 at 10 p.m. Eastern, 9 p.m. Central and online at pbs.org/frontline.

(41,175 posts)WTOP, July 30, 2018. WASHINGTON As D.C. anticipates a planned white nationalist rally to coincide with the August one-year anniversary of the deadly protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, D.C.s police chief is prepared for whats to come.
Our role is to make sure we have a First Amendment event that goes on without any types of violence or destruction of property, D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said at a Monday news conference. We intend to have the entire police department engaged to make sure that we handle this type of thing....
Still, Newsham said the Districts police department is experienced when it comes to potentially volatile rallies.
Weve had those types of high-tension assemblies in the District before. We 100 percent are going to make sure that groups remain separate, Newsham said when asked about what strategies D.C. police might do differently than those employed in Charlottesville.
The No. 1 role is to make sure nothing gets broken and nobody gets hurt. We will do that....more...
