Day one of the Paul Manafort trial: Jury selection, first witness called and a $15,000 ostrich jacke

Source: Washington Post

Paul Manafort, President Trump’s onetime campaign chairman, is on trial in federal court in Alexandria on bank and tax fraud charges. Prosecutors allege he failed to pay taxes on millions he made from his work for a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party, then lied to get loans when the cash stopped coming in.

The case is being prosecuted by the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Here is what happened on the trial’s first day.

A jury of six men and six women was selected.

The government presented its opening argument, accusing Manafort of failing to pay taxes on millions of dollars he earned working for a pro-Russia political candidate in Ukraine and using the money to fund a lavish lifestyle, including purchasing a $15,000 jacket “made from an ostrich.”

Let's just hope one of the jurors doesn't mysteriously fall out of a window or get poisoned.

I can just picture the sales pitch for this overpriced crap:

Ostrich jacket: perfect for burying your head in the sand and ignoring the law at the same time. All for the very low (read: high) price of $15,000.

It's about what a worker making the federal minimum wage grosses in a year at 40 hrs/week.

6. It's a way to launder money. You pay the store $15K and tell them to give 5 free suits to a friend.

You get a $5K jacket, a happy friend and a store happy for the business. Your friend directs contracts to you.
