(CNN) Consumers have been warned by federal health officials not to purchase over two dozen salad and wrap products available in major grocery chains due to concerns about possible parasite contamination.
On Monday, a public health alert issued by the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service advised certain beef, pork and poultry salad and wrap products might be contaminated with cyclospora. The products were sold by grocery stores including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens.
The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness as a result of consuming contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They can include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.
The illness can last a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better, but then get worse again. Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.

(18,124 posts)type incidents since trump did his 'ban' thing. I think any thinking person should know why. And I suspect it will get worse and more widespread. Wash all vegetables and fruits very well.

(22,105 posts)Anyone want some cantaloupe, green beans, black-eyed peas, tomatoes, cukes, okra, or squash? I also have a small field of watermelons that look like they're all going to come ripe at once. The only things I buy at the grocery is mushrooms, bananas, and peaches.

(129,142 posts)and some bell peppers finally getting going. Had already picked my blueberries and have a couple lemons trying to ripen on a lemon tree. My raised bed planter is full of herbs and bok choy. I have some basil (large leaf & Thai) and cilantro seedlings inside under a light not able to fit in the outdoor planter (probably better anyway since I know the cilantro would bolt quick in the heat).

(22,105 posts)Have you ever tried to dry basil? I have a ton of it, and freezing has not been that great in the past.

(129,142 posts)I think other than me maybe considering trying to dry it on a pan in an oven set at a low temp like maybe 200F (or get a dehydrator), my attempts at drying have resulted in mold! They often recommend making pesto with it and then freezing that, but I use basil for other things that aren't really conducive for pesto. I have occasionally been able to freeze the leaves without them going completely to mush but that was hit or miss. But what's funny is that when I do want to make something with fresh basil, I never ended up having any around and had to go to the supermarket to see if they had one of those bagged plants or had some in small retail herbs packs. I do have seeds now and want to try to keep a couple plants going for when I suddenly need to use fresh...

(4,642 posts)going no meat is making more and more sense each day. But, then we have the Mc D salad problem caused by lettuce and the contamination starts in the field, not the packing or distribution centers. I wonder if better washing technics are called for?
