The White House defended President Donald Trumps cryptic assertion that an I.D. is necessary for purchasing groceries, telling reporters Wednesday that Trump was talking about buying alcohol.
If you go to a grocery store and you buy beer and wine, certainly youre going to have to show your ID, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said when asked about Trumps comments from the night before at a rally in Florida. She said he wasnt talking about himself when he made the comment because Trump doesnt drink alcohol.
Im pretty sure everybody in here who has been to a grocery store thats purchased beer or wine has probably had to show their I.D. If they didnt, then thats probably a problem with the grocery store, she said.

Trump has been criticized for being out of touch since he made the comments on Tuesday night. A reporter even opened the line of questioning by asking When was the last time the President went to a grocery store?

WH On Trump Fans Heckling Acosta: The Media Holds A Responsibility
By Matt Shuham | August 1, 2018 2:15 pm
After CNNs Jim Acosta was loudly heckled Tuesday night at a Trump rally in Tampa, Florida, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said while we certainly support freedom of the press, we also support freedom of speech, and we think that those things go hand in hand.
That came in response to a question at the White House press briefing, where Sanders was asked about the heckling which grew quite aggressive, according to video Acosta posted to Twitter, and spilled onto his broadcast.
Is the White House willing to say right now, in view of what happened with one of our TV colleagues last night, that it is wrong for his most vocal supporters to be menacing towards journalists doing their jobs in a situation like that? a reporter asked.
Sanders refused to condemn the yelling at Acosta.

(115,751 posts)So that's bullshit, but they know that. Because what Spanky said was this: If you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card, you need ID. You go out and you want to buy anything, you need ID and you need your picture. He wasn't talking about beer and wine; he was talking about groceries. He's probably never set foot in a grocery store in his life, kind of like George H.W. Bush who had never seen a price scanner before. But at least Bush didn't make up a lie about it.

(9,186 posts)I have salt-and-pepper hair (what there is of it), a white beard and mustache. When the teen aged clerk asks for my birth date I either refuse, or tell them to make something up, which is what I would do. If I do give a date, it's something outrageous like 11/11/1918. They never blink an eye. They think I'm 99 but still have to check before selling me wine?
If the clerk asks for an ID, I ask for the manager.

(9,186 posts)how important it is to get ID.
Several years ago, however, I bought some groceries and a bottle of wine. I wasn't asked for ID. As I put the stuff in the car, I dropped the wine and broke it. I trooped back into the store for a replacement, whereupon THE SAME CLERK asked for ID. I pointed out that she had just sold me a bottle a few minutes ago, but that I'd show her an ID if she could honestly tell me she thought I was under 21. She didn't and I didn't.

(66,401 posts)Why go off on someone like that for just doing his/her job?
If one doesn't know how awful "I want to speak to the manager" sounds when you're on the receiving end of it, one has probably never worked retail.
LisaM
(27,815 posts)I don't have a problem with being asked for ID. Some places have a policy of asking everyone.
rsdsharp
(9,186 posts)I also spent a year as a sales person in a jewelry store, and another year and a half as its manager.
I've worked retail. I don't "go off." I don't rant and rave, or otherwise make a scene. In the very rare cases when a manager is called, the clerk explains the situation and I say nothing. It isn't necessary; the manager can see that I'm over 21. There is, however, only so much BS I will tolerate.

(9,186 posts)If they were, it would happen every time; it doesn't. Typically there is no issue. When there is, I'm usually asked for my birth date. Not an ID, but my birth date. They will accept ANY date, regardless of how far fetched, without proof, so long as it is more than 21 years in the past. This isn't protecting the store from potential illegal sale of alcohol to minors. It's window dressing that is a waste of time.
I do agree with you statement, other than to reiterate that I am not showing ire or anger toward the cashier. I simply refuse to play the game.

So, i decide i'm just going to get take out and eat in my room the 4 days.
I go to a local gas station/convenience store to buy a 6 pack for my room.
Lady cards me. I'm right around 50 at that point, and when i was that age, the drinking law was 19, so i've been legal for 31 or 32 years at that point.
I show her the ID, and she says "Oh, i didn't need to ask you. But, i'm 81 and everyone looks to young to drink, to me."
Thought that was a pretty funny line by her.

I do remember Quayle and "potatoe" and I vividly remember a few years later when Lamar Alexander, who had created an image of himself as a flannel shirt wearing "average guy" governor of Tennessee, was running for president and couldn't answer how much a gallon of milk cost!

(16,113 posts)Those are the only three states where you can't buy beer at a grocery store by law. In Maryland, it varies based on locality.
There's another 10 states where you can get beer, but not wine.

(10,137 posts)New York grocery stores carded me the last time I tried to buy beer there (and I'm in my sixties). Montana didn't when I bought wine there last week (a surprisingly decent local vintage). Haven't been carded in California in decades, even when buying the hard stuff (which can be sold in grocery stores here).
Why can't this administration just admit it made a mistake rather than digging themselves in deeper?

(94 posts)In Pennsylvania, however, they do not sell beer, wine, or liquor in grocery stores. If you want beer, you have to go to a bottle shop, where you can buy up to a 12 pack. If you want a quantity bigger than that, you have to go to a beer distributor. If you want liquor or wine, you have to go to a state store. Oh, but if you want 24 beers, and just want to get them at the bottle shop, you can buy a 12 pack, walk to your car, go back in, and buy another! Oh, Pennsylvania!

Were strongly opposed to Shopper ID laws. There has been no evidence that grocery fraud occurs on a widespread basis, and restrictive Shopper ID laws only serve to prevent eligible shoppers from buying their groceries on shopping day.
