US trade war will add $3,000 to price of some Toyota pickups, minivans

Source: CNBC

The Trump administration's trade war will make Toyota pickup trucks and minivans more expensive, adding about $3,000 to the sticker price of some of its best-selling automobiles, Toyota executives said after reporting record profits Friday.

Global net income at the Japanese automaker rose from 613.0 billion yen ($5.52 billion) to 657.3 billion yen during its first quarter ended June 30. But executives told reporters on a call Friday that the increased U.S. tariffs could seriously affect Toyota's bottom line and hurt jobs.

"A 25 percent tariff on automotive imports, which is just a tax on consumers, would increase the cost of every vehicle sold in the country," Toyota said in a statement.

The extremely popular Toyota Camry sedan, which is assembled in Kentucky, would cost an extra $1,800 if a 25 percent tariff were to take effect, the company said.

First, you obviously know nothing about international corporations. You really think the nefarious Japanese are shipping back money to Japan. The profits go to The Toyota company which my 401k is actually invested in. So some of that profit goes to me.

But where you really fail is your Jeep comment. If you truly buy jeeps you are supporting a company that is legally headquartered in the Netherlands. The name of the company that owns Jeep is Fiat-Chrysler. I am sure the Netherlands appreciates your purchase.

Toyota has a large presence in the United States with six major assembly plants in Huntsville, Alabama, Georgetown, Kentucky, Princeton, Indiana, San Antonio, Texas, Buffalo, West Virginia, and Blue Springs, Mississippi. Toyota had a joint-venture operation with General Motors at New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont, California, which began in 1984 and ended in 2009.[95] It still has a joint venture with Subaru at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. in Lafayette, Indiana, which started in 2006. In these assembly plants, the Camry and the Tundra are manufactured, among others.

The federal government makes more on the income tax from those workers than what it would make in tariffs, while those tariffs were probably lower sales which will lay those workers off.

All these tariffs will do is cause the parts manufacturers to switch to countries like Vietnam to get cheaper labor and avoid the tariffs.

They should move it to Canada.

They can make up the tariff costs on lower health care costs in Canada. Healthcare in Ontario costs businesses about 1/10th of what it does in the US.

Toyota already has a manufacturing complex in Cambridge, Ontario.

my wife and I got our new 4Runner(hers) and my Tacoma two years ago and don't have to deal with trumps stupid tariffs. With a little luck by the time we need to upgrade to newer models, trump will no longer be president and his tariff war with others will be dead and gone. The sooner trump is gone, the better for our nation, our environment, and our sanity.
