Yellowstone visitor that taunted bison arrested, officials say

An Oregon man was arrested Thursday night after getting caught on video earlier this week “harassing a bison” in Yellowstone National Park, officials announced.

Raymond Reinke, 55, who was journeying across multiple U.S. parks throughout the week, was taken into custody by Glacier National Park officials, a news release from Yellowstone officials said.

“We appreciate the collaboration of our fellow rangers in Glacier and Grand Teton national parks on this arrest. Harassing wildlife is illegal in any national park,” Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk said.

Since late July, Reinke was arrested multiple times, officials noted in the release. On July 28, law enforcement rangers at Grand Teton National Park took Reinke into custody “for a drunk and disorderly conduct incident,” after which he was booked in jail overnight.

at YNP, that's what I was hoping to see, that guy getting flung and gored.

Apparently he has been arrested elsewhere for bad conduct in national parks.

The type of tourist who shows up in the parks these days should not be allowed in, they are disrespectful, rude to other visitors and park staff, disobey every rule they can identify and trash the resources of the parks as they plow through them desperately speeding from one traffic jam to the next.

They are why I bailed on that work, the tourists have become assholes, at least 50% of them as far as I could tell.

too many retirees w/ too much time and alcohol on their hands.

This is unfortunately true at our state parks too. I avoid going to the Lake of the Ozarks too, w/ all of the drunks. It's dangerous and not very enjoyable.

it seems it's a bit different. The place is huge, it takes days to "see" a respectable amount of it just from your car, narrow mountain roads. What we see around here is the tour bus driver who is running late and can't stay in their own lane running cyclists off the road as well as everyone else, tailgating, etc.. Then they let everybody out in the middle of a traffic jam to go pet the bison/bear/elk, on a two-lane road...

Then there are the international crowds, some are really great as respectful tourists, and then there is this growing mass of a certain few groups who not only come in a wave of tour buses but they have also learned how to rent cars and RVs... from a country where most people don't drive. They have no licenses to drive, nor do they have any sense or skill in the act which results them driving down the middle of the road, ten or more miles below the speed limit, have no clue about driving up or down large mountains... just one of my rants.

We, as a people, as a species decided that these places need to be protected from us for future generations of all species. We have not only dropped the ball on this, we have kicked it into the bushes and stomped of to sulk at the picnic table.

He probably knew, but it's obvious he didn't care at that point. It sounds like he's been on a "drunk and disorderly" rampage for the last couple of weeks, which tells me this is more than just a guy being stupid. Once he gets out of jail, he's going to need some time in a rehab hospital, or possibly even a psychiatric hospital. This guy ain't right. I'm glad they caught him, and charged him, too. Hope they do something about him, instead of just letting him back out onto the streets, where he can pull more crap like this.

I think a couple of weeks in jail will maybe get his attention. However, if he does this because of mental problems that he cannot control, he should get some psychiatric help.

Buckrail POSTED ON AUGUST 3, 2018

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The long arm of the park law caught up with the man seen this week in the viral video taunting a bison in Yellowstone National Park.

Last night around 10:45pm, Glacier National Park rangers apprehended Raymond Reinke, 55, from Pendleton, Oregon. Reinke was wanted following an incident earlier this week at Yellowstone National Park when he was captured on video harassing a bison.

Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk said, “We appreciate the collaboration of our fellow rangers in Glacier and Grand Teton national parks on this arrest. Harassing wildlife is illegal in any national park.”

Raymond Todd Reinke mugshot from arrest on 11/23/13.
(Umatilla County Jail)

Reinke had been traveling to multiple national parks over the last week. On July 28, he was first arrested by law enforcement rangers at Grand Teton National Park for a drunk and disorderly conduct incident. He spent the night in the Teton County Jail, and was then released on bond.

didn't get to harass a grizzly before being arrested in Glacier Park!

He likely would not have survived.

Of course, the truly sad thing is that the grizzly would then have been killed as well.

I think bears should not be killed for beating up stupid humans, even if they eat them. I think that hmans should fear the bears, if we let them eat a few idiots, I suspect the attitude of the idiots might change a bit when they know the bear will only get some food and not be killed for doing what bears do, kill stupid people.

Anyone this stupid and arrogant, that has already been cited for similar behavior is not worth the animal possibly being shot or removed from the park. I have no sympathy if he gets gored.

worked at Yellowstone one summer and we were warned about the stupidity of people. People would encircle the animals to take pictures, the animal would panic and bolt into the people. Some folks would put their kids on the backs of black bears to take pictures. Disneyland mentality does not work in nature. This guy should be forced to work in the facilities that hold "dangerous" animals that are now imprisoned due to the stupidity of humans.

People doing this are risking their lives more than they know. I've been there, and me and others witnessed something like this with bears, and the man was actively agitating them , and later he was by me and I didn't know it was the same guy and asked him if he saw the idiot doing that to the bears. He said nothing but was later arrested after others had turned him in. A ranger once told me a family from a foreign country actually was walking towards a group of bison when stopped by them. They were actually going to set one of their small kids on a bison's back for a photo, but was stopped before they could try to do it. These wild animals are dangerous at times , and deadly, and very , very fast. Its like their their pools of hot water, some people hop into them not realizing they're deadly .

And I remember seeing a bunch of tourists getting out of their cars to get a better photo of a bear.

I was also in a traffic jam caused by a bison blocking the road. Despite really needing to find a men's room, I suffered in my car for over 45 minutes. I never once thought about getting out of the car and trying to chase it off the road, because I'm not a fucking moron!
