The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 689, the largest union for Washington, DCs public transit system, is refusing to go along with a plan to have separate trains for participants of a controversial Unite the Right rally planned for August 12.
-snip-
Transit workers were revolted by the proposal.
Sources have shared with ATU Local 689 that a hate group with Ku Klux Klan affiliation will be provided three private Metro rail cars and police escort to Foggy Bottom Metro Station for the Unite the Right 2018 rally, ATU Local 698 said in a statement.
More than 80% of Local 689s membership is people of color, the very people that the Ku Klux Klan and other white nationalist groups have killed, harassed and violated, the statement continued. The union has declared that it will not play a role in their special accommodation.T

(9,426 posts)How insulting to even expect them to serve these racists. What are the racists afraid of, that they want private rail cars? Normal people might harass them? If they truly believe they are right, why not be proud, and mix with other "normal" folks? Cowards.

(3,056 posts)To be brutally frank though, this kind of thing infuriates me:
Yes, their speech is protected, and as long as they have the proper permits, they should be allowed to march. However, with that being said...if what you are saying is so heinous, so disgusting, so inflammatory, then you should be willing to face the consequences of that speech. I don't see anything in The Constitution that guarantees police protection for you. If you're so sure of your position, be willing to defend it yourself without hiding behind people that have nothing to do with you and your racism.

(15,696 posts)...our signs into the reataurant area because the building was leased to a private owner corporation, and they didn't have to let us have our signs in plain view. They were prepared to call the police unless we put our signs face down on the floor while we ate.
But Nazis get special treatment? GRRRRR!

(3,056 posts)You should approach them with that idea. Hell, I'd work if they did that. Only it would be better if it was only one car. That way they could have the full experience of sweltering heat and over crowding. And they should take them the long way on top of it.

(5,487 posts)Let them run the train halfway or so and then shut it off between stations due to "mechanical" problems.
Let the fucking Nazis feel what it's like they so ardently approve of....
Let the fascist cops go rescue them. OOPS! Forgot to shut off the 3rd rail!! My bad!!

(51,623 posts)to separate them from anti-tRump resisters so each side would be "safe". They did this during several rallies in my area and at The Wall protests when the moron came in person. I think it is a good idea to keep people safe since the alt-right is violent and likes to incite fights. The problem I have is that the sheriffs are protecting the wrong people! I have witnessed it myself on several occasions since I attend events often. The police, sheriffs and SWAT team face the resisters when we are the nonviolent, peaceful protesters...it does not make sense. They have their shields, clubs, helmets and rifles and face our side every single time. The pro-KKK asses are wrapped in flags and yell horrible things at us, our speakers, they use bull horns, and similar disruptive tactics to stir things up. Sometimes the police can be somewhat human but not the sheriffs or SWAT team. They protect the alt-right.
*BRAVO to the union members. I would have done the same and would expect my fellow union workers would too. RESIST! REMOVE! Peace.

(21 posts)That we paid more attention to the people that live and work around our federal government. These are the most informed voters what can be had. When they express themselves, there is a lot to be learned. It always baffles me that they are not in the for front. The very air that they breath is controlled by the federal government. They deserve a voice. Or, at the very least, they deserve a vote.
