UPDATE: ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The National Park Service says four people have died in the crash of a sightseeing airplane in Alaska’s Denali National Park after thick clouds hampered rescuers’ response to a distress call.

The agency says a fifth person aboard the plane carrying four Polish passengers is missing and presumed dead. Searchers reached the crash site in steep, icy terrain Monday.

The plane crashed around 6 p.m. Saturday near the top of a mountain ridge about 14 miles (22.5 kilometers) southwest of Denali, North America’s tallest mountain.

After the crash, the pilot reported by satellite phone that passengers suffered injuries. The satellite connection failed before he could give details.

Clouds and rain Sunday and earlier Monday prevented searchers from spotting the plane...More...

Way back when I graduated from high school, Alaska airlines gave every Alaskan high school graduate a free round trip ticket. It wasn’t for an unlimited amount.

I chose to take a round trip flight to Denali (then called Mount McKinley). My best friend did the same so we could take the trip together.

Shortest (gravel!) runway ever. On the mountain. We walked around for a bit then hopped back aboard for the (shortest) takeoff (ever!) Arrived back in Anchorage safe and sound.

Sad to hear tourists crashed on the mountain. It’s breathtakingly beautiful.

Alaska sightseeing plane crashes killing four, pilot missing

ANCHORAGE (Reuters) - All four Polish passengers on a sightseeing plane that crashed near North America’s tallest peak in Alaska were found dead at the crash site on Monday, the National Park Service said.

Missing but presumed dead was the plane’s pilot, the park service said.

The plane crashed on Saturday evening near the summit of one of the mountains in Denali National Park at a site too treacherous for rescuers to reach until Monday morning.

A helicopter made it to the site early on Monday, and a park ranger used a “short-haul” technique – descending from the hovering aircraft on a secured line – to examine the crash scene, said Park Service spokesman Peter Christian.
