Ohio Dem Danny OConnor Takes on Pelosi As Race Too Close to Call: We Need New Generation of Leadership
by Ken Meyer | Aug 8th, 2018, 8:14 am
Democratic Ohio congressional candidate Danny OConnor gave an interview to CNN on Wednesday, during which he took the opportunity to take shots at Republican opponent Troy Balderson along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Even though Balderson most likely defeated OConner last night in their battle for the right-leaning district, election officials are still sorting through the ballots after the race was deemed to close to call right away. During his conversation with John Berman, OConner went into detail about his campaigns outreach strategy and his thoughts about what the election could say about the rest of the country.
Since OConnor has been clear about his aversion to Pelosi in the past, he was asked whether supporting her is too politically toxic now for Democrats trying to attract new voters. OConnor answered that people clearly want a new generation of leadership in Washington, therefore theyre intrigued by those who present themselves as independents focused on the issues.

(4,341 posts)Once in a while some thoughts need to stay inside the head, at this point in the history of the USA it is best to stay united and not create division because it only feeds the right. How easy it is now to say "not even democrats want Pelosi", there you go, you have given them a slogan for their base...
Why do the idiot base of the republican party stays united? because they see a consistent message, republican politicians never act according to their principles (there is no proof they have any but...), they follow the leaders without question, that unity that single-mindedness appeals to their base.
Having someone who has and can fight republicans, like Pelosi can, is not a bad thing.

(9,393 posts)He knows full well he can do nothing about Pelosi in the short term, and I have no doubt he will support Pelosi 100% once he gets elected. In the long term, it's a given that we need and will have a new generation of Democratic leaders. I also suspect that Pelosi herself will facilitate the transition once she achieves her goal of taking over the House.
What I hear is O'Connor articulating a multi-faceted long term course of action and, arguably, positioning himself to work in concert with the current Democratic leaders. It is to his credit that he can put it in terms that appeal to the voters he needs to win in November.

(5,790 posts)Congress is generally whiter, older, and more male than the population at-large. We need to see that remedied.
While Nancy Pelosi should continue to be listened to and consulted, the leadership torch needs to be passed to someone like Schiff or Lieu.

(7,888 posts)It is astonishing that Democrats, some Republicans and the O'Conner team pulled off this upset in Ohio. It is my hope that they will insist on participating in a recount. Do not concede until there is a fair and unbiased count of all those votes, including those forced to vote provisional ballots.
It is not "most likely" that O'Connor was defeated and I don't subscribe to this reporter's characterization.
Even though Balderson most likely defeated OConner last night

Pretty crappy technology if you ask me.....
I know the current and former Party Chairs; I've asked them about this; they say it didn't happen.
Republicans steal elections the old fashioned way.

(10,885 posts)Many in our party just think its time for newer blood.
Admittedly, That can be stated more artfully than some have done by giving Pelosi and Other older leaders in our party their well deserved praise and respect.
Nancy is a great Dem and a great American.
But, as an old person myself, Id love to see a mandatory retirement age in Congress.
Nancy is currently 78. Id like to see it be mandatory that you cant run again once you will reach 80 while in office.
If that makes me an ageist, so be it. We have a minimum age to be in Congress, why not a max age, as well. If this wont fly, then just set term limits at 15 two year terms in the House (thats 30 years - more than enuf to be in power).

(9,272 posts)POTUS too. We need new young faces! I'm old myself (61) and have no problem settling an upper age limit to these things.

(3,818 posts)by large margins. Younger voters do not "believe" in party, so as a result, the DNC bank account has really been raided and there isn't much there, because, you know, party.
I do not get why it is okay to crap all over Nancy Pelosi but every other woman needs to be fluffed and coddled. She is a tuff broad and can take care of herself, but this crapping all over her before even stepping foot in the Capitol, needs to stop. They don't even know her.
Democrats need to quit answering "gotcha" questions - which include abortion, "welfare", et al - because all it does is allow the 'pugs stay on top of messaging and the media plays right into it, and puts the Democratic contender at a losing position trying to play into the 'pug narrative.
I waiver back and forth on age-restriction. Nancy knows where the bodies are buried along with other older Democratic congress & senators. When we get back in charge for once and all, then we can help them in retiring. Until then, we need them now.

(13,056 posts)For the time being. Everything u've said is absolutely true. Nancy has provided steady, strong leadership. The Repugs fear her, which is why they bash her the same way they bashed Hillary. The youngsters need to give the senior party leadership the respect due them and learn the ropes from them.

(94,679 posts)FWIW, I'd say half the Democratic House candidates I've talked to have said the same thing.

(15,289 posts)corruption of Trump, congressional Rs and the GOP in general. Maybe the residents of OH-12 won't like it when they learn of their hard-earned tax dollars are paying salaries and benefits to the likes of Chris Collins. Maybe they won't like it that 3 unelected Trump pals are secretly running the VA.
These are 2 of many better issues on which to campaign.

(24,710 posts)that are so full of the Federalist Society, that just maybe this should be the topic of discussion, putting "people" on the bench, that hate the Constitution, hate workers rights, hate health care for all, etc..... and just love the shit out of having foreign "people" send money into campaigns and think that it is just fine to turn a blind eye to corruption for starters
And to top it all off have someone(s) commit treason, you think that would be a priority .............................maybe its just me liking someone that wants to fight for my progressive bleeding heart causes, and when that human being had the gavel, she fought for me........................she made mistakes, but she damn near always had my back and the countries back, what do we have now........................enabling traitors that think party is more important than country, maybe that's were some should start that are running for office...........................

(32,640 posts)that she's not the best person to actually do the job they've been electing her to do for years, that would be a big accomplishment for a newbie.
And not a likely one.
As for Nancy:

Pelosi is good, but won't let go, neither will Fienstein.
A new path needs to be forged. I don't know where it is coming from, and I sure as hell don't see it now.

(3,818 posts)1960's, which is really what the GOP fights against -- and why they fight tooth and nail to stay in control of the narrative. The last time they stood down is when the Women's Movement, the Peace Movement, Equality for All Movement, Ecology Movement, et al. Which is what the GOP then starting tearing down, nail by nail, board by board, when they came in power; and part of the problem is that nobody stood up for all the movements, which gets us to today. History is important, even political history.
BUT! saying change is need now! is not going to help the Democratic Party in the mid-terms. AFTER we are back in charge, then let's start looking at the next generation and start changing within, but not now before one of the most important elections we have stood up and voted for. All the infighting in public is what is losing us elections.
There is a time and place for everything and now it's time for a united front in spite of what the trolls are trying to do.
There is a really good quote by Adlai Stevenson: "Change in inevitable. Change for the good is a full time job."

Chris Matthews did his best last month to stir up the MSM/Republican manufactured "controversy":
Questioned repeatedly by MSNBC Hardball host Chris Matthews if he would support Pelosi if a Democratic speakership depended on his vote, he finally said: I would support whoever the Democrat Party put foward.
Previously, OConnor several times gave the answer he has rendered on the campaign trail and in TV ads: Both parties in the House need new leadership, and the old ways arent working.
Danny ain't playing. I'm not either. Joe Scarborough and others have a "Democrats divided", revenue-generating narrative that they're looking to sell. No thanks.
