Trump's Lawyers Counter Mueller's Interview Offer, Seeking Narrower Scope
Source: NYT
WASHINGTON President Trumps lawyers rejected the special counsels latest terms for an interview in the Russia investigation, countering on Wednesday with an offer that suggested a narrow path for answering questions, people familiar with the matter said.
Jay Sekulow, one of Mr. Trumps personal lawyers, confirmed that a response was sent but declined to comment on its content. The presidents lead lawyer in the case, Rudolph W. Giuliani, noted the documents that the White House has already provided and said, Were restating what we have been saying for months: It is time for the Office of Special Counsel to conclude its inquiry without further delay.
The letter marked the latest back and forth in the eight months of negotiations between Mr. Trumps lawyers and the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III. Last week, Mr. Mueller proposed a slightly altered format to the expansive interview he wants to conduct with the president.
Mr. Trumps lawyers did not reject an interview outright but included the narrower counteroffer, one person familiar with the response said. However, the person said that Mr. Trumps lawyers did not want him answering questions about whether he obstructed justice.

(50,562 posts)Trump wants to steer Mueller's investigation away from him and toward Hillary. Trump promised to put Hillary Clinton in prison for something, and if he has his way she'll be locked up by the end of this term.
He is not going to answer any question that pertains to his campaign's conduct during the election, or just about anything else.

(5,271 posts)so I don't see any downside since Trump's stalling reduces expectation that Mueller can wrap things up quickly as it looks like it is Trump who is causing the probe to drag on by him not being willing to sit down and get the interview over. Mueller does not need to interview him and I doubt he will bother to subpoena him.

(37,457 posts)We all know Trump is going to lie out his ass during any interview or subpoena, and Mueller should just gather evidence from everyone else. The more evidence Mueller has, the quicker he knows Trump IS lying (besides the obvious default position), IF Trump ever testifies. I suspect Mueller already has a criminal case of obstruction of justice already against Trump.
