Violence Against Women Act Is About To Expire

Source: Huffington Post

In late July, House Democrats introduced a measure to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, or VAWA. Then House lawmakers went on recess. When they return on Sept. 4, they will have only a few weeks before the law expires.

...

While VAWA was reauthorized in 2000, 2005 and 2013 with bipartisan support, the current House bill does not have a single Republican co-sponsor to date. As time runs low, advocates are growing increasingly anxious.

...

VAWA, which was authored by then-Sen. Joe Biden and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994, was the first piece of federal legislation to address domestic violence as a serious crime.

The law provides grants for law enforcement training, victim services and prevention efforts and led to the creation of the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Hold this as a hammer over RepubliConMEN heads until they reauthorize it. Otherwise they will get hammered with it by Democrats during the October campaign.

Unfortunately it's that matter of "elections having consequences". The RW loons have a "War on Women" and they are proud of it.

One is to provide a mechanism for reviewing the law periodically. Is it effective? Is it overkill? Can or should it be modified?

The second is because it includes funding. If a bill is open ended, then the funding is open ended. At $100 million/year, an open ended bill will cost tens of billions of dollars (making reasonable assumptions that the US will continue for another 200+ years). With projections of a deficit, that's 10s of billions of dollars added to the deficit. So it sunsets. That allows not only for budget-based denials, but also for revising how the law awards or distributes grants.
