New poll shows 2018 race for Maine governor in virtual dead heat

Source: Portland Press Herald

Republican Shawn Moody and Democrat Janet Mills are in a dead heat in the Maine governor’s election, according to a new poll by Suffolk University in Boston.

In the race for the U.S. Senate, incumbent Angus King, an independent, holds a commanding lead, with 52 percent saying they would vote for him if the election were held today, while 25 percent said they would vote for the Republican challenger, state Sen. Eric Brakey, and 9 percent would vote for the Democrat, Zak Ringlestein.

The Suffolk poll also found that the biggest issue for respondents in deciding who to vote for as governor is health care, with 28 percent ranking that as their top concern. The economy was a close second, with 26 percent saying that was the issue that mattered most to them. Education and taxes trailed as the top issue, with 11 percent each. Only 4 percent said the state’s ongoing opioid crisis, which claimed 418 lives in 2017, was an issue for them in picking the next governor.

On other issues, the poll found that 51 percent support Question 1, a ballot measure that would create a universal home care program for the elderly by adding a 3.8 percent tax on household incomes above the amount subject to Social Security taxes, which is $128,400 in the year 2018. Thirty-four percent oppose the question and 14 percent are undecided.

Her Name recognition can't be beat, and she's very popular in the state.

Last year she was considering running for Governor. If she had run for Governor, she would be a formidable opponent, given her popularity there and her name recognition. But she decided to stay in the Senate.

Until our state constitution is amended. Republicans have been dragging ass on this because they know it is easier for them to win with the plurality voting. Mainers voted twice already for ranked choice voting, so we'll get it done eventually. No one is going to let this issue die, but for this particular election, we cannot use ranked choice voting. Here's where we can use ranked choice voting currently.
1. All primary elections
2. General election US House of Representatives
3. General election US Senate

We currently cannot use ranked choice voting for
1. General election Governor race
2. General election Maine State House of Representatives
3. General election Maine State Senate

I hope that makes it more clear. So.. This is still a risky race for us with those two independents running. We will be using ranked choice for the district 2 U.S. House race, which I'm hoping will help in unseating Bruce Poliquin with Dem Jared Golden in his place. Sen Angus King pretty much has his race won already. He seems to be the most popular Maine politician right now. He sides with the Dems a lot, but conservatives like him better I think simply because he doesn't have the Dem label. Seems dumb, but there is a lot of blind hate between the two major parties. Independents are judged on their own merits and not who they are associated with.

I think he would have faired better with getting some of the conservatives and independents to vote for him. Mills is tainted by her run ins with LePage and that makes her more polarizing. Also, harder to get conservatives to vote for a woman still.

There is a pocket of liberals here, but we are surrounded by red communities. I have never, ever heard a local republican with a coherent argument in support of his or her conservatism.

Janet Mills is one of the most qualified Democratic candidates our state has ever had. She's fought long and hard for our rights as Maine's Attorney General, she has bottomless energy, and while the men in both parties talk a good story, Janet rolls up her sleeves and actually gets stuff done. (When she couldn't get LePage's administration to supply Narcan to police stations, Janet carried around a supply in the trunk of her car and drove around the state distributing it herself.)

She's also got a wicked good sense of humor.

The fact that that idiot Moody is anywhere near her in the polls just proves that women candidates have to be TEN TIMES BETTER than the guys to get men to vote for them.
