A Maryland man who was assaulted by a bicyclist who yelled racial slurs at him early Monday morning in Washington said he feared that the attack was just the beginning of what could happen to other people of color as organizers prepare to hold a Unite the Right rally in the city this weekend.
Ketchazo Paho, 34, said he was driving through Georgetown on his way home when he was assaulted by a bicyclist who struck him in the head with a metal bicycle lock.
The Metropolitan Police Department arrested a white suspect, Maxim Smith, and charged him with one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. The police said they were investigating to determine if the crime was motivated by hate or bias.
Mr. Smith, 24, was being held in jail pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday morning. It was unclear who would be representing him.

I got the impression that the bicyclist is one of DC's garden variety lunatics. There could be one wandering around on the Metro platform, shouting obscenities right next to a family (last Friday evening, L'Enfant Plaza). Or sitting next to you on the bus, also shouting obcenities at everyone in earshot (Metrobus headed to Wheaton on Viers Mill Road, Monday evening). Or he could be the bike messenger who pulled out a bike lock and came after me (King Street, downtown Alexandria, years ago). Or he could be the guy who doesn't bother to stop blocking the doors, so that people other than himself can get on or off the train (every Red Line train, ever). Or the guy manspreading in rush hour, pretending to ignore the people around him who are forced to stand. Or the farejumper who dares the station manager to do something about it. Or the bicyclists who blow through the red light, as I am crossing the street, in the crosswalk, with the crossing signal (too many instances to cite just one).
Rally, shmally. DC and its environs will always have jackasses. They're here for life.
