London counterterrorism police heading investigation into car crash outside Westminster

LONDON — A man crashed his car into security barriers outside Britain’s Houses of Parliament during Tuesday morning’s rush hour, injuring “a number of pedestrians,” police said.

The driver was arrested at the scene. Witnesses told reporters that the man was led away in handcuffs by officers as ambulances and police vans surrounded the scene.

In a statement, Scotland Yard said that none of the injuries were life-threatening. London Ambulance Service said its staff treated two people at the scene. The Metropolitan Police spokesman’s office tweeted, “While we are keeping an open mind, the Met's Counter-Terrorism Command is leading the investigation into the #Westminster incident.”

Several witnesses told British news media that the crash appeared to be intentional. The name of the driver has not been released.

Video here:

He went to his right, as if to stay on the road around Parliament Square, and then suddenly swerved, hitting, I think, a pedestrian (or possibly a cyclist), drove across the pavement, and into the road leading to the entrance to parliament, where he tried to ram the barrier, which stops him (with 2 police officers at the barrier leaping out of the way).

The politicians are on holiday, and security in that part of London is particularly tight.

What with that guy who put "Windsor Castle" into the satnav and drove to a pub with that name (then went to Buckingham Palace where he was arrested) and this, they do seem directionally challenged.

I was there in May and you'd need more than a car to get through that fortress. Not to mention the armed to the teeth guard dudes surrounding the place.

Fortunately, no one got killed or needed to be in hospital for a long period. And his choice of timing was bizarre: as you say, why target Westminster at a time when Parliament isn't sitting?

1. For all knew the car was a bomb. They ran in with no delay. True hero’s.

2. Look at the drop the officer had on the perp with his assault rifle. Yet the black man who actually committed a terrorist act lives.

I dare say the results here would have been different.

He's pissed off that the police didn't shoot without assessing the situation; he thinks an armed police officer should shoot anyone who's tried to kill. And meanwhile, his fellow RWers are saying that public executions would be a good deterrent and entertainment, fantasizing about dropping him from a plane since he's an immigrant, or muttering about needing to take "firm action" to stop anything like this ever happening - which, given their track record, means stopping all Muslim immigration or similar.
