Pelosi seizes on anti-corruption message against GOP

Source: The Hill

BY MELANIE ZANONA - 08/14/18 06:00 AM EDT

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) is moving full steam ahead on a Democratic strategy to paint the GOP as corrupt ahead of the midterm elections, a case that got new legs after the arrest of Rep. Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) on insider trading charges last week.

Pelosi has decided to make ethics a core pillar of House Democrats’ push for the majority this fall, seizing on Collins’s arrest in a way she hasn’t done with past GOP scandals involving Trump administration officials.

But with Collins, a sitting member of Congress and Trump's earliest congressional backer, Pelosi believes that Democrats have a ripe opportunity to draw a connection between the president and House Republicans who are on the ballot this November.

While it’s unclear whether the message will resonate with voters amid a seemingly never-ending stream of Trump controversies, Pelosi, who deployed a similar strategy in the 2006 midterms, which first handed her the Speakership, is going all-in on the idea ahead of November.

only democrats can take a breakaway dunk opportunity at a completely unguarded basket, slow down, wait until a defender closes on them and try to do a meek layup.

This is a break GD rim and backboard opportunity.

will try to undermine this thunder by creating and pushing about a thousand "Democrat corruption" faux stories starting ... ummm, I don't know ... today, tomorrow? Fingers crossed we don't blow it with erudite messages like this (quote from Pelosi in the link):

“There's a real clarity now in the obstacle that their culture of corruption is doing to impede better policy,” Pelosi said Sunday on “AM Joy.” “Members of Congress should not be sitting on boards of companies, especially those whose are impacted by policies — policy decisions and the government — so this is appalling, but it shows the brazenness of it all.”

The quote from Sarbanes about Collins resonates much better:

“There’s something poetic about the fact that he was making these insider trading calls from the White House picnic,” said Rep. John Sarbanes (D-Md.), who has been spearheading Democrats’ anti-corruption efforts with Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.). “In a sense, he sort of wandered into an ethics-free zone, and he couldn’t help himself. That’s the way this White House has operated.”

Good move on Nancy's part to give him the lead in orchestrating this message.

The MSM has to ALWAYS frame the Dems message as political opportunism. It’s never enough to be on the side of right, we are never allowed to be sincerely outraged by GOP corruption, climate denial, obstruction, etc.

No no; the issue is always framed by the media as mere tactics that Dems will use to win votes. It makes me sick: reThugs get the message out verbatim with lots of faux patriotism sloganeering but everything the Dems say has to be framed as just more political opportunism.

Liberal media my ass...

The people don't trust the GOP or the Dems. That's why they elected a Con Man. Why Not right?

You have to hit em where they are the strongest: "Defense of America"

The GOP is now #ThePartyOfPutin Make the case!

That is an attack they can not defend against and will never recover from imo.

Our candidates can run positive campaigns focusing on honesty and integrity ... implying without explicitly stating their opponent is a theiving scumbag lowlife. Let the 527s and similar groups attack corrupt politicians with negative ads.

There is so much money slated for this election cycle that almost every ad will be negative. Stand out by being different! Remind voters what America used to stand for: truth, justice and the American way.
