Federal judge dismisses Dems request for records on Trump's Washington hotel

Source: Raw Story

NOOR AL-SIBAI 14 AUG 2018 AT 17:37 ET

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit brought by a group of House Democrats seeking records on Donald Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta wrote that the group of 17 Democrats seeking the large cache of documents on the Trump International Hotel in D.C. have no legal standing to bring the suit.

The report noted that the Obama-appointed judge wrote in his opinion that there is no legal precedent for the type of request the congressional Democrats were suing over.

Mehta added that “the House members had other options to settle disputes over documents, including a formal subpoena from a congressional committee or other institutional responses from Congress,” the Journal noted.

“The fact that a political remedy is hard to achieve does not automatically swing open the doors to the federal courts,” the Obama appointee wrote of the suit brought by Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

In their lawsuit, the report added, the Democrats cited the obscure “Seven Member Rule” — a 1928 law that “enables any seven members of the panel to request and receive documents from the federal government.”

Trump has had enough time in office to consolidate power and influence the Judiciary. It is time for Mueller to come through with some serious charges and get this idiot impeached in the House.

Judge Mehta is probably trying to preserve the rule of law. And might be trying to avoid setting precedents the bad guys could use.

But yes, should have gotten that pos out of the White House a lot sooner.

Whitehouse at all however we do not live in such a world nor do we live in a world where we had the evidence let alone the votes to impeach him in those first 6 months and even if we win ever Senate seat in November we will still would not have the required number of votes.

9. The judge made the proper ruling. Do we want to set precedent for the GOP to use?

I think the judge made the proper ruling. He is right about there being a remedy that does not include the courts. That is the way it should be. It's not the judge's fault we have a complicit GOP congress.

We don't want the courts thrown open like this because the GOP will use them non-stop once they lose the majority.

11. I belive this is different than them blowing up the Senate rules.

I do see the point that they would do it anyway and in a heartbeat if they could. They proved that with the Senate rules on SCOTUS appointments.

This though, is a bit more difficult to blow up all at one time the way the did that.
