Brennan: Trump worked with Russians and now he's desperate

WASHINGTON (AP) Former CIA Director John Brennan said Thursday that President Donald Trump yanked his security clearance because his campaign colluded with the Russians to sway the 2016 election and is now desperate to end the special counsel's investigation.
In an opinion piece in The New York Times, Brennan cites press reports and Trump's own goading of Russia during the campaign to find Democrat Hillary Clinton's missing emails.
Trump himself drew a direct connection between the revocation of Brennan's clearance and the Russia probe, telling The Wall Street Journal the investigation is a "sham," and "these people led it!"
"So I think it's something that had to be done," Trump said.
Brennan wrote that Trump's claims of no collusion with Russia are "hogwash" and that the only question remaining is whether the collusion amounts to a "constituted criminally liable conspiracy."........................................

Thats why the president revoked my security clearance: to try to silence anyone who would dare challenge him.

When Alexander Bortnikov, the head of Russias internal security service, told me during an early August 2016 phone call that Russia wasnt interfering in our presidential election, I knew he was lying. Over the previous several years I had grown weary of Mr. Bortnikovs denials of Russias perfidy about its mistreatment of American diplomats and citizens in Moscow, its repeated failure to adhere to cease-fire agreements in Syria and its paramilitary intervention in eastern Ukraine, to name just a few issues.
When I warned Mr. Bortnikov that Russian interference in our election was intolerable and would roil United States-Russia relations for many years, he denied Russian involvement in any election, in America or elsewhere, with a feigned sincerity that I had heard many times before. President Vladimir Putin of Russia reiterated those denials numerous times over the past two years, often to Donald Trumps seeming approval.
....................................................
Mr. Trumps claims of no collusion are, in a word, hogwash.
The only questions that remain are whether the collusion that took place constituted criminally liable conspiracy, whether obstruction of justice occurred to cover up any collusion or conspiracy, and how many members of Trump Incorporated attempted to defraud the government by laundering and concealing the movement of money into their pockets. A jury is about to deliberate bank and tax fraud charges against one of those people, Paul Manafort, Mr. Trumps former campaign chairman. And the campaigns former deputy chairman, Rick Gates, has pleaded guilty to financial fraud and lying to investigators.
Mr. Trump clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him, which is why he made the politically motivated decision to revoke my security clearance in an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge him. Now more than ever, it is critically important that the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and his team of investigators be allowed to complete their work without interference from Mr. Trump or anyone else so that all Americans can get the answers they so rightly deserve.

(4,341 posts)and thus it is hard for me to understand why, with so much public proof of wrongdoing by this administration, why is it that it is taking Muller so much time to indict trump and many of his minions? I know many of us are becoming desperate, but the writing is on many walls, the wrongdoing cannot be missed. I would think that what we see every day from these thugs should be enough to put a few, including trump, in jail.
This stupidity that a sitting president cannot be indicted does not fly, if no one is above the law then it applies also to whomever is sitting in the post of the presidency. He is not a king, he is a public servant, and maybe that is the word that should be used to refer to trump "servant", he may hate that and leave on his on accord.
I do not agree with impeachment, that would leave Pence on the chair, and he is as bad or worse than trump, he is evil and intelligent, that makes him more dangerous.
Vote in November, make the idiot a lame duck, restrict all his moves, pass laws that won't allow him to spend tax payer money playing golf, make his life miserable by sending him to meet presidents in African countries, South American countries, all those places he hates.

(30,613 posts)It's right there in black and white in the United States Constitution:
Article 1, Section 3, Clause 7: Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party, convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.
Many, even some on DU like to bring in all kinds of spurious external language to claim that a sitting President cannot be indicted. Utter nonsense. Even the claim that Impeachment is a prerequisite to indictment is unsupportable when you look at the actual language. Leon Jaworski refused to indict Nixon because he thought it politically too difficult, and that's where the DOJ policy has its roots. But that's policy, not law, and certainly not Constitutional law. That policy was never endorsed by any court, nor the Congress, nor even officially sponsored by a President (aside from those already in hot water).

(4,341 posts)I have to confess that I have been wanting to find it, but procrastinated.
More people should read it and someone should read it to trump as a bedtime story.
Not sure who said it on TV, I think it was Scarborough, that the idea that a president could not be indicted did not fly, that it would assume a president could shoot someone in cold blood and not go to jail, and that does not make any sense.

(92,204 posts)was not involved in compromising our nations security or voting system to a foreign power. That in no way does not mean a Pence administration wouldn't be a disaster or hurt a lot of people
As to your second point, I would think Mueller is lining up as much hard evidence as possible so he has a solid casel, so even if the process of impeachment isn't successful, the evidence would open the door to an indictment of a sitting President, which no doubt would be challenged on its Constitutionality, but allow multiple avenues if the evidence demonstrates he was involved in illegal activities.
I also believe if the evidence is there, it is the responsibility of Congress to bring articles of impeachment against this administration. To do nothing would be a direliction of the duties of Congress

I take issue with this. To think that pence knew NOTHING about the collusion is a stretch. He both knew and he participated in it. None of them are innocent. As far as republicans go (all the way down to dog catcher) if they didn't know then they allowed it. Let them all hang.

Policy wise there is no difference, and I agree none of them are innocent, they are both deplorable, though I will add there is one subtle difference. Trump actually goes out of his way to hurt people. He is a socio-path
I do not know if that exactly applies to Pence or not
In the end though it makes little sense to compare two evils.
However, I do believe that if the Mueller investigation reveals that Trump has violated the law, and compromised the U.S., he must be impeached, regardless of whether Pence is worse or not

(4,341 posts)We don't know that, and I know I am making assumptions based on his moral character and lies that he has already be found to have told. For example, he denied knowing about Flynn, it was proven to be a lie, he has also lied about other issues and circumstances that would have placed him in the middle of many of the actions that involved Russians. He also denied having had talks with Russians, and that was also a lie. Lets not forget that he was the main person during the campaign, for him to claim that he didn't know what was going on places him in one of two places, take you pick. Is he stupid/incompetent, or is he a liar? I have to go with the second choice.
I believe that, like Dick Chaney, although with less noise, Pence acts behind the scenes, we all know that trump is not smart enough to understand legislation, that he doesn't read, that he will not do research to find out what shenanigans he can get away with, and I believe that is Pence's job, which he does willingly because, and I am also convinced, that like many of us, Pence believes that trump will be either taken out of office, or he will resign making Pence # 46.
He is buying his time and screwing the country behind everyone's back.
Beware of the dog that doesn't bark.

(92,204 posts)actually involved in obstruction, abuse of power, etc., that remains to be seen.
Regardless, if Mueller shows evidence of criminal activity by trump, not only should he be impeached, but regardless whether impeachment is successful or not, he needs to be indicted. Whether the courts rule that a sitting president can be indicted we don't know, but no one should be above the law, especially when it regard compromizing our country to a foreign power

(56,828 posts)for the simple reason that the media cycle revolves around Trump and his tweets, his crazed statements and his heavy-handed actions. Pence is the complete opposite and does not have that ability to drive the news cycle like Trump. He was extremely unpopular in the red state of Indiana when he left office there - imagine what he would be in the more moderate rest of the country? And, while Pence is popular with evangelicals, he doesn't have that awful base of deplorable neo-nazis, and the like supporting him.
Plus, Pence would be like a wounded lame duck if he took over after Trump left in disgrace.

I've been listening to bull shit about how we can't talk about impeachment, that it will hurt Dems running for office, fuck that. What will hurt Dems running for office is Russians flipping voting machines, they are already hacked into several states and no one gives a shit.
How about this for a narrative for all 3 cable news networks, well at least for CNN and msnbc, impeach Trump before he destroys our democracy and our environment.

(4,341 posts)And that is wrong, the power is in the hands of the republicans at this time, they are the ones acting in a treasonous way, trying hard to hide the truth and stop the investigation.
The way you phrased it sounds like both parties are the same, and it is not, and almost never is, that both parties are the same.
This administration spends most of their time trying to find ways to stop the Russia investigation because, and it is my opinion, many of the republicans who have been elected to office are also compromised, no other reason would push Nunes, and others to do the things they do when they know their actions can be labeled as treason.

(1,770 posts)The Criminal Justice Act 1990 abolished the death penalty, setting the punishment for treason at life imprisonment, with parole in not less than forty years. No person has been charged under the Treason Act.
Life with NO parole. In a glass cage under a public toilet is preferable.

(1,414 posts)The death penalty should not only be in play it should be the only solution offered IMHO. But first, since they are so fond of the method, all elected republicans who have defended and stood by trump should be waterboarded until they confess their role in this nightmare. The republicans led by trump have not only committed treason, but have as well caused grievous, perhaps irreparable harm to the social fabric of our country. Jail is not enough! But, before we start meting out justice, let's join together and win both houses of congress so justice has a chance to be done.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/18/world/europe/trump-intelligence-russian-election-meddling-.html
WASHINGTON Two weeks before his inauguration, Donald J. Trump was shown highly classified intelligence indicating that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia had personally ordered complex cyberattacks to sway the 2016 American election.
The evidence included texts and emails from Russian military officers and information gleaned from a top-secret source close to Mr. Putin, who had described to the C.I.A. how the Kremlin decided to execute its campaign of hacking and disinformation.
snip
The Jan. 6, 2017, meeting, held at Trump Tower, was a prime example. He was briefed that day by John O. Brennan, the C.I.A. director; James R. Clapper Jr., the director of national intelligence; and Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency and the commander of United States Cyber Command.
The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, was also there; after the formal briefing, he privately told Mr. Trump about the Steele dossier. That report, by a former British intelligence officer, included uncorroborated salacious stories of Mr. Trumps activities during a visit to Moscow, which he denied.
