Thinking about her having lived long enough to sing at the First Black Presidents inauguration has made me smile a LOT, this morning.
She lived one magnificent life. And she MORE than earned everyones R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Mighty glad and grateful that she came our way.

(5,810 posts)Is the loss of people you grow up loving and respecting. Aretha Louise Franklin became known to me in my teen years. At a time when buying record albums was rare for me,
I bought two of hers. A white girl living in the Deep South in the 60s, her albums held a special place in my small collection. I remember a party at my house when I was 18 and can still see the dancing, singing and fun that happened when we played her music.
So today is a sad one for so many of us, but her music will live on to keep her much deserved legacy alive. Rest In Peace, Aretha. We will miss you, but always will have a vivid memory of your contributions to the world.

But YOU made the world pretty, and I want to thank you for that.

(13,524 posts)The inspiration for the song had come when, in response to Redding's complaints after a hard tour, (Booker T and the) MGs drummer Al Jackson reportedly said: "What are you griping about? You're on the road all the time. All you can look for is a little respect when you come home."
Producer Jerry Wexler brought Redding's song to Franklin's attention. While Redding's version was popular among his core R&B audience, Wexler thought the song had potential to be a crossover hit and to demonstrate Franklin's vocal ability. "Respect" was recorded on February 14, 1967.
....
The repeated "sock it to me" line, sung by Franklin's sisters Erma and Carolyn, was an idea that Carolyn and Aretha had worked out together; spelling out "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" was (according to engineer Tom Dowd) Carolyn's idea. The phrase "Sock it to me" became a household expression. In an interview with WHYY's Fresh Air in 1999, Aretha said, "Some of the girls were saying that to the fellas, like 'sock it to me' in this way or 'sock it to me' in that way. It's not sexual. It was nonsexual, just a cliché line."

(12,155 posts)These people are immortal to me. Aretha is a force of nature who forever changed the world with her titanic spirit and blazing talent. Otis Redding's life force continues to pulsate throughout the planet. He'll never be surpassed, either.
The M.G.'s have had a profound influence on my life. My parents had the single of "Green Onions" and I've had that song in my bloodstream since childhood. It meant a lot to me, a southern white kid and aspiring keyboardist, to see this integrated band enjoying each other and making some of the funkiest music of all time.
I had the great pleasure of meeting my hero Booker Taliaferro Jones a couple of years ago. He is strikingly handsome in person, and radiates a beatific calm -- not only a musical genius but a super nice guy.
I feel so fortunate to have lived during the years when these giants of music were and are creating these incredible gifts for us.

(13,524 posts)(Well, I never had the honor and life-time thrill of meeting Mr. Jones, but am so glad you did!!)
(Yes, Green Onions has been in my top five favorites of all time for decades now!!)
(Also, if it hadnt been for Booker T.s drummer, there would be no Respect??!? Unthinkable!!!)
I had read the other day that Aretha had lost three siblings to cancer, but until I was looking up this song today, I honestly hadnt remembered that Erma and Carolyn were singers as well...so it is comforting to know that *The Franklin Sisters* are reunited again, now and for all eternity!!!
