Australian prime minister abandons greenhouse gas target

Source: ABC News

By ROD MCGUIRK, ASSOCIATED PRESS
CANBERRA, Australia — Aug 19, 2018, 10:24 PM ET

Australia's prime minister on Monday abandoned plans to legislate to limit greenhouse gas emissions to head off a revolt by conservative lawmakers.

Malcolm Turnbull on Monday conceded that he could not get legislation through the House of Representatives where his conservative coalition holds only a single-seat majority.

He said although most government lawmakers supported the target of reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent below 2005 levels, that support was not enough.

"Even with strong support in the party room, if a small number of people are not prepared to vote with the government on a measure, then it won't get passed," Turnbull told reporters.

1. WHY are they allowed to call themselves CONSERVATIVES?

Why are they allowed to call themselves Conservatives, when they consistently vote AGAINST all efforts to truly CONSERVE? We should be refusing to call them Conservatives! Malcolm Turnbull is a true Conservative; Al Gore is a true Conservative; Jimmy Carter is a true Conservative. Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell and the Koch Brothers and all their ilk are NOT Conservatives. They are TWO-LEGGED LOCUSTS. They do not create or conserve; they only CONSUME! They are Consumerists.

2. They think of themselves as conserving "the past"

Sure. This past:

The aftermath of the infamous Traingle Shirtwaist Company fire, in which over 100 women were locked in, and burned alive, for daring to protest medieval wages and working conditions.

The day - March 8 - is now observed as International Women's Day.

I only use the word "conservative" to describe people like myself -- I want to conserve as much as we had under Obama as possible.

and that gun thing was about halfway into his PM'ship. He lost on other issues. He also set the scene for the current atmosphere of hatred for migrants, indigenous and anyone not hetero white.

I still hate you to the core John W Howard.

That little piece of shit and his greedy cronies really screwed over many aspects of society, the workplace, unions, tax, you name it. He certainly put my trajectory on a different path overnight and on more than one occasion too.
I'll never forgive him and his party for that, then again the fact that in the decades to follow nobody even attempted to turn it around is unforgivable as well.

Malcolm Turnbull abandons emissions target as he fends off speculation about Peter Dutton challenge

But the outbreak of leadership speculation has frustrated and worried Mr Turnbull's supporters. They insist the rebellion is being fuelled by a small and what they call predictable group of people, and fanned by media coverage, particularly Sydney radio 2GB.

Mr Pyne singled out former PM Mr Abbott as one of those driving the turmoil. "Tony Abbott is not making any secret about his unhappiness so it is a statement of the obvious, it is not a revelation to anyone in Australia, that Tony Abbott is unhappy with the leadership and the direction of some of our policies, he has said so himself," Mr Pyne said.

Mr Abbott told reporters as he arrived at Parliament this morning "the madness at the heart of all of our problems" is having a policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and this is why "I am so determined that we get out of the Paris agreement". "As long as we are in it we will be running our power system to reduce emissions, not to give us affordable, reliable power," the former PM said.

When asked if he had lost confidence in Mr Turnbull, Mr Abbott said it was not about personalities. "It is not about him, it is not about me, it is about what is going to give Australia the best possible energy system that delivers affordable, reliable power," Mr Abbott said.

In other words, screw the planet for a cheap power bill......

Ought to be a downright scorcher with the Earth about 2.5 million miles closer to the Sun during their summer.
