BREAKING: Manafort jury reaches verdict on some counts, but not all
Source: CNN
The jury in the Paul Manafort trial has reached verdict on eight counts, but it can't reach consensus on 10 counts.
Earlier on Tuesday they asked Judge T.S. Ellis what would happen if they couldn't reach a verdict on a count, and Ellis said to keep working on it.

(18,636 posts)Manafort could have accepted a plea bargain that would have dropped those ten charges and pleaded guilty to eight, but he refused. Actually, he may have seen more than ten dropped under an agreement. As it is, he had to stand trial on all charges.

(32,086 posts)"Deadlocked" assumes it's a 50-50 split. The verdict has to be unanimous. It could be a matter of only one hold-out who is not convinced that he's guilty.

(129,096 posts)ALEXANDRIA, Va. Paul Manafort, President Trumps former campaign chairman, was convicted on Tuesday in his financial fraud trial, bringing a dramatic end to a politically charged case that riveted the capital.
The verdict was a victory for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, whose prosecutors built a case that Mr. Manafort hid millions of dollars in foreign accounts to evade taxes and lied to banks repeatedly to obtain $20 million in loans.
Mr. Manafort was convicted on five counts of tax fraud, two counts of bank fraud and one count of failure to disclose a foreign bank account. The jury was unable to reach a verdict on 10 of the 18 counts and the judge declared a mistrial on those charges.
The trial did not touch directly on Mr. Muellers inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election or on whether Mr. Trump has sought to obstruct the investigation. But it was the first test of the special counsels ability to prosecute a case in a federal courtroom amid intense criticism from the president and his allies that the inquiry is a biased and unjustified witch hunt.

(15,286 posts)Basically there were 4 groups of charges: tax fraud, failure to report FBAR, bank fraud and bank fraud conspiracy. The jury convicted Manafort of at least 1 count in 3 of the 4 groups - all except bank fraud conspiracy. There were enough redundancies that convicting on some and not others in each group works out just fine.

(23,946 posts)maybe atrial of conspiracy to commit fraud on identical evidence...so he got spanked on the higher charge!
Conspiracy always tough to prove...actual fraud not as much.

(15,286 posts)on bank fraud at Calk's bank. It was a pretty clear quid pro quo. I think if the prosecutors had given Calk immunity and had him testify, they might have gotten a conspiracy conviction. But given what the prosecutors said about Calk being involved in other crimes, I'm thinking Calk's going to be indicted on seperate bank fraud/conspiracy charges sooner or later.

(9,670 posts)Do we have any legal beagles that might shed light on what that means?
Fred Sanders
(23,946 posts)honestly.
Prosecution got what they wanted...a man behind bars and now perhaps willing to squeal.
Kind of vindicates Page and others who pled out after seeing the discovery Manafort had in them.
Manafort is just being plain obstinate...and he has the Evil One breathing down his neck...but he is now safe in jail and nothing to lose...
Plus there is still another trial to go regarding conspiracy against the United States related to laundered money that flowed to Trump...just like such money flowed to Cohen.

But there is another trial coming up for Manafort,
and maybe Mueller can use the sentencing on this trial to "flip" Manafort on Trump.
Maybe ??????

(23,946 posts)jury found guilty of the fraud and mistrial on the conspiracy to commit fraud...Obvious at least one juror did not feel the higher standard of proof for conspiracy, personal animus has to be proven, was not met...which is why such charges always tough to prove.
Hav
(5,969 posts)First, on all counts where the jury was in agreement, he was found guilty.
Secondly, looking at the mistrials, there are similar items where he was found guilty.
Example:
24
On a count of bank fraud conspiracy to obtain a $3.4 million loan from Citizens Bank, Manafort was found MISTRIAL
25
On a count of bank fraud to obtain a $3.4 million loan from Citizens Bank, Manafort was found GUILTY
Seems to be the same loan where he was found guilty for bank fraud but not bank fraud conspiracy. 26-31 are exactly like that. What I mean with that, it's clear that Manafort is crooked as hell and the jury agrees, there just seems to be the question whether some crimes fit a certain definition.

(23,957 posts)just from the 8 charges so far, 5 tax fraud convictions, 1 FBAR filing, 1 bank fraud ($1 million)

Massacure
(7,525 posts)Per CNN, three years each for five counts of tax fraud, five years for the FBAR filing, and 30 years each for two counts of bank fraud.
From my own research, the best case scenario for Manafort is that the judge lets him serve all the sentences concurrently. The federal sentencing guideline is 57-71 months of imprisonment on the case of $3.4 million dollar fraud case (offense level 25).
https://www.ussc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/guidelines-manual/2015/2B1.1.pdf
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Federal_Sentencing_Guidelines
If the judge makes him serve the sentences consecutively, Manafort will probably die in prison. He is currently 69 years old.
0rganism
(23,957 posts)seems like Manafort will probably die in prison even with concurrent sentencing, given the 30 year sentences for bank fraud
do you think Trump will pardon him, or commute his sentence?
JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,350 posts)Manafort will do two years of relatively easy time at a Camp Fed, then get set loose.
onetexan
(13,043 posts)not sure if those are already filed but i read there's another trial next month where he may get another 20 years tacked onto his up to 80 years already.
JustABozoOnThisBus
(23,350 posts)Some of the charges have 30-year maximum terms, or so I remember reading. But I don't recall if the judge has made them consecutive, concurrent, or if the sentence has been determined.
Still, 30 years is a long time. For someone as old as Manafort, it's life.
Yes, there are still state charges. Hopefully there will be long-term sentences there.
Trump could probably still smuggle him to a non-extradition country where he could enjoy his ill-gotten gains.
