Duncan Hunter blames his wife for campaign spending and complains its difficult to live on salary in Fox News interview
23 Aug 2018 at 19:34 ET
...............................Hunter did admit to saying f*ck the Navy after he was unable to arrange a base tour that was allegedly to be used as a cover story for his familys vacation to Italy.
Hunter blamed his wife for anything amiss.
When I went to Iraq in 2003, the first time, I gave her power of attorney and she handled my finances throughout my whole military career and she continued that when I got to Congress, he said. Whatever she did, that will be looked at too, Im sure. But I didnt do it. I didnt spend any money illegally. I didnt use campaign money, especially for Wounded Warriors, theres no way.
Hunter then attacked his socialist Democrat opponent and complained of the cost of living in Southern California when asked if his salary was sufficient.
Its difficult to live in a place like San Francisco or San Diego or New York or D.C, he said. Its probably easier to live in a place like Kansas or Missouri.

How about his kids going to public schools instead of the private ones he used some of those campaign funds to pay for. And did that pet rabbit fly first class for its $600.00 plane ✈️ ticket ?

We have beautiful beaches at the coast...just a 20-30 minute drive from his district. He didn't need that trip to Hawaii!
Just go to the beach in Del Mar...or better yet go to Coronado (and stay off my beach)!

(1,058 posts)It's the biblical thing to do. In Genesis, when called out on eating the apple, the first thing Adam does is blame it on his wife, and then blame it on God for giving him his wife.
I would be ridiculously excited if we could flip this seat.

I guess reading about his mistresses in the indictment didn't sit well with the wife, that plus him throwing her under the bus.

(16,402 posts)Throwing his wife under the bus to cover his own sorry, lying ass. I'm sure she's equally guilty, but his very rapid "chivalrous" response is something else.
I've hated this SOB since the day I learned about him. Lock him up and throw away the key!

Sadly, I'm not sure it will make enough of a difference. A boat load will vote for him anyway because Republican.

(53,778 posts)to fly your pet rabbit is a routine expense everybody does.
And that's right, throw your wife under the bus for stuff you both did, see how many votes that gets you.

(10,381 posts)The distrct got moved across the bay, and Duncan SR with it, Jr got elected because most voters were unaware Daddyo had retired. Family fiefdom is likely ending.

Maybe if he supported liveable wages or at least increases in the minimum wage, it would be more "affordable". Seems they like to use the campaign account as a slush fund.

(65,042 posts)I mean, if you need to live in Kansas to make ends meet, leave CA, give up that seat in DC, find a real estate gig in Kansas.
I'm sure you'll be way more comfortable, and won't have to illegally spend campaign money.

(70,504 posts)Rep. Duncan Hunter used campaign funds to pay for $600 of airline fees to fly a pet rabbit, one of the more colorful expenses to surface in an ongoing review of his practices.

(20,190 posts)So they apparently can't live on $210K.Of course, charging those personal expenses to his campaign isn't just against the law, that is income he didn't pay federal or California income tax on.
Hey, I realize that San Diego and DC are both expensive real estate markets, but Chuck Schumer shared a townhouse in DC for DECADES. I don't know why members of Congress think they should live like they are WEALTHY on the taxpayers dime. I read that he bounced an average of 3 checks a week for 7 YEARS. He just doesn't know how to live within his sizable means.

(12,654 posts)His daddy built up a crap-load of bank as both a military retiree and a long-time Congressman, and was smart enough to cover his tracks and not to get caught when buddy Duke Cunningham was caught with both hands in the Pay to Play cookie jar.
Even after a supposed degree in IT and a stint owning his own business instead of just living off the government teat most of his life like Daddy, Jr. still couldn't figure out how to properly manage his not inconsequential financial opportunities.
Good lord, what I could do on an congressman's salary on just a few years of pinching pennies and access to cheap housing at the MWR Lodge at the Navy Yard when I was in DC.
Both he and the Missus are way too addicted to living the high life of a Trust Fund family - without having that trust fund in place.
Of course, his next cop-out will be TBI and PTSD because of his time as a Marine Artillery Officer.
Funny how that didn't seem to affect President Harry Truman...an artillery officer who was in charge of a forward observation post during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and supported Patton's tanks; those heavy WWI guns were pretty damn loud and concussive.

(50,557 posts)$173,000 is NOT a lot of money when you figure you have to maintain two houses - one in your district so you remain eligible to be in Congress, another in DC so you're not sleeping on the couch in your office - and you've got to fly back to your district several times a year to beg for campaign contributions.
He's not the first politician who tried to compensate for the fact his eyes were bigger than his wallet by dipping into his campaign funds, and he won't be the first one to go to prison for it.

(90,690 posts)...only wish they had. Maybe his kids could go to public school. Maybe his wife could get a job to help make ends meet.
By the way, I never heard any of my congressional representatives over the years complain about the salary, the perks, the travel time, not any of it. None of them were or are rich (with the exception of the Huffingtons, and they gave up after one term). And I will put Santa Barbara's cost of living -- especially housing -- up against just about anywhere.
Face it, Mr and Mrs Hunter: you guys are crooks.
NCjack
(10,279 posts)"representing in congress", he should move to a cheaper location and reestablish himself as "congressgrifter". Maybe one of the Dakotas or Nebraska, Kansas, etc. I hear prices in Kansas are sharply discounted. That may also solve the wife and kids problem, as they are unlikely to go with him. But, that's the sacrifice everyone makes to give Trump another vote in the House.
