Northern California Man Arrested For Deadly Wildfire

YREKA, Calif. Northern California authorities have arrested a man they say started a deadly wildfire last month.
California's fire agency said Thursday that it arrested 32-year-old John Colin Eagle Skoda after investigators concluded that a debris fire he started turned into a 60-square-mile blaze that killed one person and destroyed 35 homes.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Suzi Brady said Skoda quickly lost control of the unpermitted debris fire he started in Siskiyou County about 300 miles (485 kilometers) north of San Francisco.
The July 5 wildfire also forced thousands of residents to evacuate and temporarily shut down Interstate 5, a major north-south corridor.
Skoda, of San Francisco, was booked on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and fire-related charges. Jail records don't indicate if he is represented by an attorney. - End of article.

I live here. We all understood that burn season had ended weeks earlier. No idea what he would have been thinking.
in the 2 weeks following the beginning of that fire we had almost daily thunderstorms and ground strikes from lightning which started numerous small fires. Mercifully, technology allows the fire departments to pinpoint via GPS where those strikes occurred and were able to inspect and knock them down promptly.
That was then followed by these:
Carr fire (now @ 94% containment)

Hat Fire (done / extinguished)

In the midst of all of that, we have had numerous illegal camping fires, and this started due to the idiot truck driver who tried to pass traffic. Half a mile from my home.

The smoke, the anxiety, the constant need to keep windows closed and wear masks outside, I can't begin to tell you how much this Summer sucks. We are all running around with some level of PTSD at the moment.
I'm east of you, in Modoc County. We've been smoked in here for two months plus now. It's very oppressive, doing outdoor stuff is limited.

(22,073 posts)When I lived out there on the far eastern side of Fresno County, you had to get a burn permit every year from the county. Burn season was strictly regulated. Ended mid-April, if I remember right.
Doing anything else, in this climate, is just idiotic and dangerous as hell.
