More Than 500 Migrant Children Are Still Separated From Their Families

Although the deadline to reunify immigrant families separated at the border passed weeks ago, the Trump administration has still not reunited more than 500 children with their parents, according to new court documents.

As HuffPost reports, a status report filed Thursday shows that as of August 20, 528 migrant children were still in government-contracted shelters. The court-ordered deadline to reunite these children with their parents was July 26, nearly one month before the filing. An official previously said of the children still being kept from their parents, 23 were under the age of 5 — and 343 had parents who had already been deported from the U.S., HuffPost reports.

The affected migrant children were separated from their parents under the Trump administration’s cruel and inhumane “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which ripped families apart at the border. Nearly 3,000 children were separated from their parents under the policy. After public outcry, President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending his own policy. Trump’s compromise was to instead detain entire families together.

The status report filing comes shortly after a New Yorker report, in which an administration official told writer Jonathan Blitzer that the administration had been surprised by the public’s reaction to its family-separation policy. “The expectation was that the kids would go to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, that the parents would get deported, and that no one would care,” the official said.

It is amazing what can be accomplished when a judicial contempt order is issued.

would get deported, and that no one would care,” the official said.

I care.

These are crimes against humanity and those perpetrating them need to be held accountable at an international tribunal. And when Trump is taken out of the WH in cuffs, I'm not forgetting any of this.

We soft-pedaled holding the Bush administration accountable for war crimes in Iraq, but not this time.

Not this time.

There are too many distractions and this fell off the front mage. There is a good graph that shows how Omarosa knocked everything out of the media's focus and this admin has so many problems no one can keep up.

"While immigrant rights activists and advocacy groups have continued calling attention to the crisis and working tirelessly to ensure that every child is ultimately reunited with their families, much of the media “has largely moved on, worn out and dazzled by other outrages,” observed Toronto Star columnist Bruce Arthur.

As Judd Legum noted in his Popular Information newsletter this week, “the Trump administration has been able to get away with its disinterested approach to reunification by taking advantage of the short attention spans of the public and the media.”

“This week, for example, the focus has been on a new book in which a former White House aide, Omarosa Manigault, claims that Trump is a racist. As proof, she claims there is a secret tape of Trump using the n-word on The Apprentice,” Legum notes. “Interest in the Omarosa story far exceeds interest in the child separation story, even at its June peak. This week, despite hundreds of kids still in limbo, child separation barely registers.”

Legum goes on to point to a Google Trends chart showing levels of interest in the children separated from their parents by the Trump administration’s so-called zero-tolerance policy—which a 99-year-old Nuremberg prosecutor called “a crime against humanity“—compared to interest in the Omarosa story.

Some cover this, some cover judicial, some cover latest W.H. crime and so on. And to be sure each source gets its income, switch it out.

I watch MSNBC most nights, and I'd like to pay attention to Chris, Rachel and Lawrence, but they kind of cover the same item, with different slants. There is enough going on that each show could could some of the breaking news and then stories that are still vital, but getting pushed to the back burner. To be fair, I hear updates on these victims several times a week on MSNBC, but usually in the last 15 minutes of the shows.
