MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been detained in Moscow over his participation in an anti-government protest earlier this year, his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

Navalny was detained outside his Moscow apartment on Saturday afternoon for a reason that was initially unclear. But after he spent a few hours at a police station, Yarmysh said Navalny had been detained over a brief appearance at a rally in Moscow in January that called for a boycott of the presidential election in March that he said would be rigged.

Navalny was not charged but his lawyer said at the time he would have to face court at a later date.

He had been planning protests on Sept. 9 against the Russian government’s unpopular plans to raise the pension age. The opposition leader was barred from running in the March election that President Vladimir Putin won in a landslide victory.

And he already got arrested for that rally!. Wonder what the real story is. One day he will get arrested and just won't ever be seen again and Putie will say "it wasn't me". I worry for him. I hope he's successful in taking Putie down one day.

Alexei Navalny is a world hero as well as Russian hero. He speaks up and organizes protests in a country that does not allow that. His videos about the oligarchs are brilliant. I admire his intelligence and bravery and wish him long life.
Bravo!

If he'd actually be given the platform and freedom to campaign, I can see him giving Putin a run for his money. But I guess Putin is locked up for 6 more years regardless.

Russia is in much deeper than the US. They have no real historic democratic standard or law based established institutions to guide them either.

Putin arrests opposition politician Alexey Navalny once again.
If there were free and fair elections in Russia, Navalny would
be president and Putin would be in jail.
