Trump pays tribute to McCain
Source: The Hill
President Trump paid tribute to GOP Sen. John McCain on Saturday, shortly after McCain's office announced the senator's death.
"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump tweeted.
McCain, a giant of the Senate, died Saturday afternoon following a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.
His family announced Friday that he had chosen to discontinue medical treatment for the cancer, saying the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age had rendered their verdict.

Nowhere did he mention our great Senator or something else that bastard would have lied about. Publicly.

He's not worthy to be mentioned in the same day as McCain.

(49,040 posts)"John McCain and I were members of different generations, came from completely different backgrounds, and competed at the highest level of politics. But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher-the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed. We saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world. We saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.
"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John's best, he showed us what that means. And for that, we are all in his debt. Michelle and I send our heartfelt condolences to Cindy and their family."

(384 posts)Trump hated McCain because he knew that he could never exceed McCains service to the country. So, in typical Trump style, instead of acknowledging McCains service he simply burned it to the ground. I cant believe the US has reached the point where a man of McCains stature has been vilified by the right and GOP - dark days.

(3,006 posts)Below is a statement issued by Senator John McCain on President Trumps meeting with Vladimir Putin:
Todays press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. The damage inflicted by President Trumps naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake.
President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world.
It is tempting to describe the press conference as a pathetic rout as an illustration of the perils of under-preparation and inexperience. But these were not the errant tweets of a novice politician. These were the deliberate choices of a president who seems determined to realize his delusions of a warm relationship with Putins regime without any regard for the true nature of his rule, his violent disregard for the sovereignty of his neighbors, his complicity in the slaughter of the Syrian people, his violation of international treaties, and his assault on democratic institutions throughout the world.

On the passing of John McCain, WH pool reporters are being advised by @PressSec to refer to Trumps tweet. That Trump tweet is obviously not the same as an official statement from the president of the United States.

(101,361 posts)It could have been said about anyone who had just died. It was Obama's tribute they made the centre of the report, since it was a proper one about McCain and his achievements.
They did note that Melania did do a follow-up "Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation" which at least includes "service" and "thank you".
