Hours before Kavanaugh nomination hearings, Bush lawyer releases 42,000 pages of documents to Judici

Hours before the start of hearings on Brett Kavanaughs nomination to the Supreme Court, the lawyer for former president George W. Bush turned over 42,000 pages of documents from the nominees service in the Bush White House, angering Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, who issued what is certain to be a futile call to delay the proceedings.
Not a single senator will be able to review these records before tomorrow, Schumer (D-N.Y.) tweeted Monday evening.
Taylor Foy, a spokesman for Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa), responded that our review team will be able to complete its examination of this latest batch in short order, before tomorrows hearing begins. A few hours later, a tweet from the committee said that the Majority staff has now completed its review of each and every one of these pages.
The hearings are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, with opening statements by committee members. No information was released on the subject matter of the documents, and Bushs lawyer asked that they be kept from the public, made available only to committee members and staff.

This theft must not stand over the long haul, and must not exonerate Trump from responsibility for his election activity in 2016.

(43,295 posts)what if a widespread fraudulent election and foreign influence corruption is proven?
Would the American people stand for it?
Would political parties find a way to root out the influence of the foreign government?
Would "forced" retirements send some packing?
Would some be removed?
You really have a dour outlook on many things, and you always quash much of what I post. Just saying

(37,648 posts)There is probably a way to impeach a justice, but I don't see that happening, if the Justice hasn't committed one of the things required for impeachment.
Kavanaugh SHOULD be removed, now that we know Trump didn't really win, if that can be proved. But the government will NEVER tell us that, because they say it will create among the people a doubt about the results of our elections. And frankly, there's not really a way to prove that the election results are false.
MAYBE if he's shown to have conspired with the Russians to win, MAYBE that's enough to declare his Presidency fraudulent. Maybe. We don't know.

(30,613 posts)If we take a big enough majority (not before 2020), we could potentially impeach them on grounds of illegitimacy.
Pretty big leap though.

(7,531 posts)If enough is proven about how RedDon didn't actually win the election and Dems get enough power, they should impeach both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh (if he gets seated.)

(3,254 posts)Next time the GOP has the majority, they'll pack the court until they have the majority again at 13 Justices, or 15 Justices. Turn and turn about, until eventually the SCOTUS has to have an auditorium built to house them.

(11,260 posts)If it ever got to 17, it would be much less meaningful.
Each retirement would be less critical etc.
There is no constitutional mechanism for removing appointees that are illegitimate due to an illegitimate president. Packing is the only viable solution.
We gotta stop bringing tuna casseroles to gun fights (hat tip to whoever mentioned that earlier today on DU).

(37,648 posts)regarding Kavanaugh, I will NOT be happy.
If Schumer doesn't take to the airwaves, blasting the Republicans about this, I will NOT be happy.
If there aren't Dem ads for the mid-terms about this, I will NOT be happy.
At first I thought the Dems shouldn't show up for the confirmation hearing at all. But if they don't, there won't be anyone to point out Kavanaugh's negatives (to the extent that anyone knows about this mysterious person).
I'm most surprised that it was BUSH'S lawyer who did this. Bush, who was just as McCain's funeral talking all mushy gushy about abuse of power, honor & decency. I suppose it's possible that Bush's lawyer had been told not to produce those documents, but finally did it, anyway (some of the documents), or kept insisting until he got permission.

(43,295 posts)Democrats are demure. They acquiesce. They are reasonable. They believe in rule of law, precedent, and courts of law. So old school.

(37,648 posts)I expect a fight...and I don't mean showing up at the hearing complaining to the guilty ones about the doc dump. They are laughing. I expect them to take it to the people, some of whom will care, but won't know if the Democrats don't take to the airwaves about this.

(6,933 posts)Why should Democrats be surprised at anything anymore?
They should have a strategy that is immune to such predictable moves by Republicans. They should have a strategy that repels such Republican tricks like a military tank repels arrows.
Today should be the start of that predictable legislative battle. Being caught off-guard on day one would not be an auspicious omen. C'mon, Democrats, show them what you've got!
