NEW YORK (AP) — A plane has been quarantined at New York’s Kennedy Airport when about 10 passengers became ill aboard a flight from Dubai. The Emirates flight landed around 9:10 a.m. Wednesday. The airline says the passengers were getting medical attention “as a precaution.”

Video from news helicopters showed the jet sitting on the tarmac surrounded by ambulances, vehicles and airport personnel. Passengers were exiting the plane with their luggage and getting on to buses.

Representatives of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were on the scene.

A New York police counterterrorism division tweeted it appeared to be a “medical situation.”

My bet is on it being due to something they ate or drank while on the flight because if cstanleytech Sep 2018 #3
Other reports are saying 100 sick out of 500 onboard NickB79 Sep 2018 #7
Still the most likely culprit is food or drink that was improperly prepared and or stored. cstanleytech Sep 2018 #8
It's pretty much guaranteed to NOT be food poisoning. LisaL Sep 2018 #9

With a plane full of 500+ passengers and crew, 10 sick people is a blip - 2%. Since planes are, as others have observed, incubators for illness, that's a pretty small number and likely to be explained away by any number of things, i.e., they were ill before they boarded the plane, members of one family, food poisoning via specific/special meals, etc.

On the other hand 100 sick is 20%. That's "Strain"-level illness, and I'd begin looking for a vampire in a casket in cargo.

Question. Is JFK or any other large international airport set up to accommodate/quarantine a plane-load of sick passengers and crew? I would guess that they would say the answer is yes, but in practical terms probably not.

it was something worse we would have seen alot more than 10 people on a flight with 100+ on board.

One of the symptoms is said to be coughing. Most likely some sort of virus.

that can cause people to become ill plus some foods we eat are poisonous if not properly prepared.

The flight originated in the Middle East, where MERS has been most prevalent: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/mers/index.html

And MERS is a nasty disease that causes flu-like symptoms.
