Jerry Falwell, Jr. exploring whether Liberty should drop Nike after Colin Kaepernick ads
Source: USA Today
Dan Wolken, USA TODAY Published 1:59 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2018 | Updated 2:01 p.m. ET Sept. 7, 2018
Jerry Falwell, Jr., the president of Liberty University and a close ally of President Trump, told USA TODAY Sports in a phone conversation Friday that Nikes ad campaign centered around Colin Kaepernick might cause the school to re-consider its relationship with the apparel company, which signed a contract last year to outfit Libertys athletic teams through 2024.
Were exploring the situation, Falwell said. If Nike really does believe that law enforcement in this country is unfair and biased, I think we will look around. If we have a contract, well honor it, but we strongly support law enforcement and strongly support our military and veterans who died to protect our freedoms and if the company really believes what Colin Kaepernick believes, its going to be hard for us to keep doing business with them.
But if its just a publicity stunt to bring attention to Nike or whatever, thats different. We understand that. We understand how marketing works. But theyre going to have to convince us that theyre not proactively attacking law enforcement officers and our military. If thats the reason behind using this ad, were going to have a hard time staying.
Kaepernick and NFL players who have followed his lead in taking a knee during the national anthem have said they are doing so to call attention to social injustice issues, and not as a sign of disrespect for the military or law enforcement.

(22,050 posts)They should tell Falwell that they won't do business with bigots and racists.
Nike's stock would climb, I bet, and they would sell more product.

And to go further, any 'university' that teaches and promotes pseudo-science and outright lies should be stripped of their accreditation. Sorry, but if you push creationism and climate-change denial, you're snake-oil salesmen, not educators.

If I tried to not do business with every group/store/person someone wanted me to boycott or not otherwise do business with I'd have to stay home and make everything from scratch.

(24,339 posts)outside sources -- like Universities
In August 2017, Nike was in negotiations with Georgetown University, Northeastern and Rutgers over working conditions. At that time, the University of Washington was watching the Georgetown-Nike meetings to decide what the University would do
Georgetown and others were letting the contracts expire, partially due to pressure from the student body to improve working conditions in Vietnam
The only thing it appears to have agreed upon (regarding worker's rights and safety in Vietnam) is that Georgetown University gear would not be produced using sweatshop labor
As to working for better conditions, let's be real, they only made changes in the past because they got caught. They used child labor to make soccer balls until 2006. They stopped that because it became a big scandal and FIFA went into damage control. Nike, Adidas, et al stopped having hand-stitched balls made in Pakistan. It was not for sustainability or for a better world or anything else like that

Nike for supporting Kaepernik.
New Balance because they had one of the first company CEOs to challenge Trump's economic plans. The Daily Stormer set up a hit piece, claiming New Balance to be the shoes of White Supremacists, to hurt their sales. Unfortunately, many news outlets ran that story, which did hurt New Balance--the only major shoe manufacturer in-sourcing jobs to the US.

(2,574 posts)is saying - " If you actually believe in what Colin Kaepernick believes and you are committed to social justice and his message, then we are not on board. If, on the other hand, this is simply a publicity stunt in order to make money, we are good to go. If your stance is a lie and a fraud, we get it. Profit over people - and if you can lie while doing it, all the better. Oh, and we will give you some cover on this - you know - the law enforcement and military and vets card. Just give us a sign."
Falwell's blatant and explicit admission of his utter hypocrisy is beyond belief. You know damn well, Nike will talk to them; Falwell will say they were convinced; and the low-level right-wing troops will be satisfied all around, and Liberty's teams will keep wearing Nike. As far as Nike is concerned, when they do something about their horrific labor practices, I'll start buying their stuff again ( it has been over 25 years since any Nike product has come into our house).

(1,402 posts)I am more than proud of Nike and Mr. Kaepernick. It's about time someone has the balls to take a stand against all the violence in our country. He is, in my opinion, a better Christian than the Falwells or DJT!!! Jerry Falwell, Jr and DJT both need to take a HIKE!!

They support coward/traitor Donald who ridiculed and insulted all POWs with his 'captured' comments.
Perhaps Liberty U should seek guidance in Two Corinthians.

(6,831 posts)What in the blue fuck does any of this have to do with an institution of higher learning and education ? Since when do universities involve themselves to this degree in discourse that has nothing to do with their stated purpose ? This is a college, not the NFL.
Additionally, At no time did Nike say ANYTHING about law enforcement, the military or veterans. As a vet, I find this entire prostitution of purpose disgusting. This is out of control.
Falwell is nothing but a pathetic, groveling whore to trmp, desperate to amount to something. If anyone, anywhere had any questions about his dubious commitment to faith, this should put that to rest.
