Jeff Bezos Launches $2 Billion Fund To Help The Homeless

Source: Reuters

By Munsif Vengattil, 1 hr. ago.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday launched Bezos Day One Fund, a new philanthropic initiative, with an initial commitment of $2 billion to help homeless families and create preschools for low-income communities.

The fund will be split between Day 1 Families Fund and Day 1 Academies Fund.

The Day 1 Academies Fund will launch and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired preschools in underserved communities.

Bezos, with an estimated fortune of more than $160 billion, is currently the world's wealthiest man, according to Forbes.

"The Day 1 Families Fund will issue annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families," Bezos said in a tweet. - End, brief report.

Many Amazon workers become eligible for food stamps due to low wages, while Bezos is now the richest person in the world. And tRump gave Bezos many Billions in tax cut.

for the next 10 years. A commitment of $1 trillion.

That will help the homeless seek shelter, help, love and everything else.

He can live by with 68 billion.

He can even live by with a billion dollars, and use the rest of the funds to pay his workers a living wage.

just FYI

And the American phrase is "get by"... not "live by"... so maybe it doesn't translate well to your native language (Russian?)

5. We need to understand why people become homeless

While efforts like this may end up doing a bit of good, we really need to understand why (in this supposed greatest country on Earth) people lose their homes. I'll throw out a few ideas on that.... low wages, medical expenditures, loss of job through corporate takeover/downsizing, mental illness. We need to put a real effort into understanding and eliminating what causes these issues.

for the workers of his own company, I'm sure the two funds appreciate the financial support and publicity. They'll likely do something good with it that benefits thousands of people.
It's always funny seeing the reactions when a rich guy spends a large amount of money for something good and people attack him that he should give more.

the homeless situation. After the vote was approved he applied pressure and the council revoted and rescinded their vote.

Pay to support the homeless with taxes paid by Amazon and where the control is outside corporate hands.

to employees, and perhaps put some of this money aside to elect better people who actually give a crap about their fellow Americans (and use this money to kick the repugs/rump out of office permanently). I'd think that in the long term, this would increase wealth all around and help the country more.

13. Let me get this straight and I am not trying to pick on this "hedge fund " manager

his total wealth is 160 billion dollars, my total wealth including my social security check per year and my home is a little over $275,000 in wealth...............

And I have Russian oligarchs that are trying to take my government down, while they siphon off the European continent assets and create hate and fear..................

And I have communists sitting in China, doing the same thing....................

And in South East Asia, there our governments that are doing the same thing, as the above two.................

And in this country, I have a party that is trying to take this money that I have to live off every year and give to the above and then go work for the above, and blaming me, and millions of others has being shiftless, because we don't have enough wealth.

But out of the goodness of his heart (Bezo's) to get a big fat write-off on his wealth, he couldn't spare giving me and 350 million human beings in this country 1 million dollars each or for that matter 350 million dollars to the population of the country, to boost me and everyone else (350 million out of poverty), because we don't have 160 billion in assets, because, there are some that use his platform, and buy his products and go to his food store to live......................

For, I am not reckless with my money flow, and that I and the other 350 million would save you about 1.4 billion in your venture.........................but he needs 160 Billion to expand is oligarchy and taking 2 billion off, while if my thinking is messed up........................so be it...............

Can you spare me a dime Bezo's ...........................

I don't get why this guy has so much money. He keeps saying he's losing money on Amazon but that's obviously NOT the case. OK giving $2 billion to help the homeless is nothing to sneeze at. I believe that none of us on DU could be that generous. (I certainly couldn't!) But there has to be other motives involved here.
