Brett Kavanaugh reportedly accused of sexual misconduct in letter flagged to the FBI by Democrats
Source: New York Daily News
Democrats on Thursday alerted the FBI to decades-old sexual misconduct allegations against President Trumps Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, according to reports and a person familiar with the matter.
The potentially damning claims, which come as the Senate prepares to vote on Kavanaughs nomination to the highest court of the land, were made in a letter obtained by Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Dianne Feinstein, a Democratic source told the Daily News.
Two officials briefed on the letters contents told the New York Times the allegations relate to possible sexual misconduct between Kavanaugh and an unidentified woman when they were both in high school. The nature of the allegations were not immediately known.
Feinstein (D-Calif.) informed her fellow committee Democrats about the letter Wednesday evening, the sources said. Several of the Democrats advised her to contact the FBI.

(6,377 posts)Thing is, unless the accusations are really serious, it'll probably roll off him. High School was so long ago for him that unless it's something like rape, the general public and Republican senators won't care.

Seems to me that in high school, especially back in Kavanaugh's day---they'd have both been minors, or virtually so.
This seems counter-helpful. At least as so far reported.

(2,596 posts)Depending on the age of the purported "victim", if he or she were a minor, he would have committed statutory rape or molestation. This was the allegation that DiFi turned over to the FBI, no? He must have been an adult at the time of the incident's commission.
All that said, the rethugs generally don't give a flying fuck about sexual crimes and misdemeanors of any of their members, provided the victim wasn't the same sex as the offender.

(7,412 posts)I think only 12 states have an age of consent of 18. Most states also have laws as well that shield teenage relationships, like in some states it is perfectly legal for an 18 year old to have sex with a 16 year old even if the age of consent is 18 because their ages are less than three years apart and stuff like that.
I would imagine most things would be well past most of the statute of limitations in existence as well.

It wouldn't matter, anyway. Clarence Thomas was confirmed, after all. I think the head of the Committee at that time, Biden, even voted to confirm him.
No one believed women back then.

It sounds like the accusation is date rape, groping or something similar.
If it was consensual and she was just underage why come forward about it now?

(2,596 posts)Everything that a person does throughout his or her life matters insofar as it has a shaping effect on their character as a whole. Obviously, things that happened when someone was an adolescent or young adult should be examined in that light. But please don't couch this in a shrug as if what someone does in high school isn't relevant. What if he had burned the damn school down? What if he stole cars and cracked them up or stripped them down? What if he set neighborhood pets ablaze? Sodomized a two year-old?

If the accuser doesn't give anymore details or come forward this isn't really going anywhere. "Something happened 40 years ago but I won't tell you what it was or identify myself" isn't going to gain much traction.
