Report: Canadian Pot Smokers Risk Ban From U.S.
Source: The Daily Beast
Canadian cannabis users, investors, and workers will risk a lifetime ban on travel to the U.S. if American officials gain knowledge of such information, a senior Customs and Border Protection official told Politico. Canada will legalize retail marijuana sales starting Oct. 17, the worlds first major industrialized nation to do so, but Todd Owenexecutive assistant commissioner for the Office of Field Operationssaid the pot industry is not welcome in the United States. Owen told the website that Canadians who have smoked pot in the past and lie about it to an official will have committed fraud and misrepresentation, which carries a lifetime ban. If the traveler admits to past use, they will be considered inadmissible and will not be allowed to return unless they pay a $585 waiver fee. In addition, investors and pot-industry professionals will not be considered admissible. We dont recognize that as a legal business, Owen said. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the United States had the right to enforce its borders the way it wanted to. Every country has the right to judge who gets to come into their borders or not. I wouldnt presume to have any other country tell me how or who we can let into Canada, he said. And I certainly wont work to assume or impress upon the U.S. who they have to let in or not.

(65,085 posts)There are completely legal said businesses right here in the US. How can they not recognize that as a legal business?
Stupid drug warriors. Are the CEO's of companies that make Norco or Oxycontin also personna non grata?

(34,136 posts)Even if the states have accepted it. This is just a way to pressure both Canada and the states who have legalized pot, as well as another way for border agents to exert control over people.
Fucking fascists.

(11,885 posts)Known corrupt russian criminals and spies into this country still. They ban people of color any way they can, and ignore those corrupt people they need help from. Now any way they can hurt Canadians just because he wants to is another huge mistake by trump.

(133 posts)Canada has had a policy of non-admittance for Cannabis users for a very long time. A single conviction gets you banned for life. This is nothing more than another stupid government policy by both sides of this argument.

(11,862 posts)Any American that has a felony conviction on their criminal record may not be permitted entry into Canada unless they have received special permission from the Canadian government. Even if the conviction happened 20+ years ago, foreign nationals with a felony may never be deemed rehabilitated by the passage of time and risk being denied entry at the Canadian border even decades later. The Canadian border has full access to all the criminal record and DMV databases in the United States, so anyone who has been convicted of a felony will very likely be flagged at the border.

(43,206 posts)generally speaking and a greater percentage of the Canadian population have sampled or do smoke cannabis I would estimate.
Investors? So if you own shares in a pharmaceutical company developing cannabis-based pain relief for cancer patients you are inadmissible to the US? Youthful indiscretions are same as driving through customs while high?
I just don't know what the world is gaining with all this interrogation of people. $585 a head I guess. "Totality of the circumstances." I could apply a lot of totality for such confiscatory heist. Wonder if the money is skimmed off to a tariff account, or grows the ICE budget. Surely not helping little old ladies in Arkansas.
Bureaucratic power whimsically applied - BPWA. Legal proceedings devolving to those of the Inquisition and trial by fire.

(28,136 posts)While camping we meet a couple who are friends with a couple from Canada who come down to the desert every winter to help manage a park. They are "snowbirds" and have done this for years.
Last year while coming into the USA they were asked at the border if they EVER had smoked cannabis. They laughed and said yes, decades ago.
That was it. That's all it took.
They were not allowed into the USA. It was big hassle.
I'm forgot if it was a lifetime ban or not but it really caused them much strife.
