North Carolina senator: Damage from Florence 'in the billions of dollars'

Source: The Hill

BY MICHAEL BURKE - 09/16/18 09:51 AM EDT

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis (R) on Sunday said that damage from Hurricane Florence will likely cost the state "billions of dollars."

Tillis said on "Fox News Sunday" that Florence, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, "is likely going to produce impacts greater than Hurricane Matthew." Tillis said the state has not fully recovered that storm, which hit about two years ago.

Tillis also said Florence will damage the state's agriculture industry and that the worst devastation from the storm may be yet to come, saying that "the floods that come midweek are likely to be as damaging or more damaging than the original event."

"We've got to sort all that out," he said. "I think it’s fair to say in terms of economic impact, rebuilding, that we are talking in the billions of dollars.”

Tillis added that it's "very difficult to say" when life will return to normal in North Carolina.

1. "Florence, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm" - it's now a Tropical Depression.

However since it is still close to the coast (with the center of circulation inland), it is still pumping ocean moisture over the same areas as it slowly crawls further inland and more recently, towards the NW.

have lax building codes and have allowed urban sprawl to cover wetlands which can help soak up extra rain.
Plus add on the Repugnants refusal to fund updates and repairs to the infrastructure among which are the varies dams and you have a recipe for disaster.

... time to move inland. It is only going to get worse. Why keep throwing good money after bad, unless you have a scam/angle to bilk the government?

To come begging the government they claim to hate, for help. They always do. They better hope to get a better response than an orange asshole shows up and throws paper towels at them.

You are one who voted to bankrupt the federal government thru tax cuts for the rich you POS.

There is no money for recovery at the federal level.

Well, I'm sending you my thoughts and prayers. I'm sure God will help you pull yourselves up by your bootstraps and get it all done without any assistance from the rest of the country. We wouldn't want to make you dependent and lazy. Besides, all that aid would go to pork-barrel projects anyway.

God helps those who help themselves and that's just what you should do. Pray for that. I'm sure you don't want to ask for any of that socialist federal aid anyway. It would be an affront to your pride.

Of course, I was being sarcastic and I don't feel that way about all the people of NC. There are good people there who need and deserve help right now.
