Grassley working to set up calls with Kavanaugh, accuser before vote

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, is working to set up phone calls with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, before a committee vote scheduled for Thursday.
"Given the late addendum to the background file and revelations of Dr. Fords identity, Chairman Grassley is actively working to set up such follow-up calls with Judge Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford ahead of Thursdays scheduled vote," a spokesman for Grassley said on Sunday.
The aide added that "the Chairman and Ranking Member routinely hold bipartisan staff calls with nominees when updates are made to nominees background files."
The announcement comes after Ford spoke publicly about her accusation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in the early 1980s, while they were both in high school, in an interview with The Washington Post published on Sunday.

(67,782 posts)But since that all happened (the announcement of the telephone "interview" it now seems that there's clamoring for the two of them to appear at a live hearing of the Judiciary Committee. Damn, I hope that happens.

Frankly this nomination toast is fried, the credibility contest being resolved in three days so a vote can take place is...too stinky even for Shitler stained a Republicans. Imagine this all hanging over the head of a confirmed justice forever...political suicide.
This is not Anita Hill 2.0, this is a fresh ball game.

From across the room a very drunken REDACTED said mixed words to Kavanaugh ranging from "go for it" to "stop."
At one point when REDACTED jumped onto the bed the weight on me was substantial. The pile toppled, and the two scrapped with each other. After a few attempts to get away, I was able to take this opportune moment to get up and run across to a hallway bathroom. I locked the bathroom door behind me. Both loudly stumbled down the stair well at which point other persons at the house were talking with them. I exited the bathroom, ran outside of the house and went home.

REDACTED was male, again my error. One other female at the party, I think that was in follow up news, and 3 males in total.

(70,238 posts)......The move to set up phone calls with Kavanaugh and Ford comes as Republicans are facing a growing demand, including from some of their own members, for the vote on Thursday to be delayed.
GOP Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), a member of the committee, told the Post that he doesn't believe the vote on Thursday should move forward without hearing more from Ford.
For me, we cant vote until we hear more," Flake said.
Several Democratic members of the committee as well as Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) have also called for the vote to be delayed.
I support Mrs. Fords decision to share her story, and now that she has, it is in the hands of the FBI to conduct an investigation. This should happen before the Senate moves forward on this nominee," Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the committee, said Sunday.

(15,286 posts)and testify. They don't need to do telephone calls, just reopen the hearing and let her testify. I'll bet Kavanaugh won't look her in the eye.
Mr.Bill
(24,296 posts)have the right to hear her testify and have her answer their questions. Grassley is trying to remove the Democrats from the process.

(4,066 posts)I hope she accepts the invitation for the calls. For the simple reason it adds to the gravity and credibility of the allegations if she does so. She should insist that all of them be made public though.
We all know that if the incident with Kavanaugh amounted to attempted rape these calls will be full and total rape of her character and soul by the GOP. They don't have a soul or care about her. They care about getting him in to save their power.

(17,387 posts)Maybe this is how they handle allegations of sexual assault in Iowa? If a woman is sexually assaulted, have the victim and assailant meet and pray and all is forgiven. Grassley should give Steve Alford a call for some tips on how to handle this.
http://www.espn.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/9168818/espnw-ucla-coach-steve-alford-statement-not-rooted-reality
In a report by a committee commissioned by University of Iowa president David Skorton to investigate the school's role in resolving the case, it was detailed that: "... individuals affiliated with Athletes in Action, a religious organization, contacted the victim to seek an informal resolution of the matter by asking the victim to meet informally for prayer with the perpetrator. One of those individuals had a longstanding relationship with the basketball program and its coach, which included traveling with the basketball team and conducting voluntary chapel and Bible study activities for the team and staff."
In other words, according to the report, Alford tried to indirectly coerce the victim into dropping her charges. The victim's response, the report said, was to pursue criminal charges against Pierce.
"I'm not sure who would think this apology is just a coincidence, that he decided to apologize after all these years and that it just happened to be when he was getting a new job and this issue has come up," Miller said.
On Friday, ChicagoSideSports.com quoted Pierce, who said he was back in his hometown of Chicago because he was injured while playing in France, and that he called Alford last week to congratulate him on the UCLA job.

(14,967 posts)The whole phone testimony thing is an attempt to keep the public from seeing her face while she speaks, while she listens to the questions posed to her. It is an attempt to keep the public from putting a face to the name of the person harmed by this man. It is an attempt to keep the public from feeling empathy.
There isn't a person alive who paid attention to the Anita Hill testimony who does not remember it (regardless of which opinion-side they were on, villian or victim). They remember. This stuff is memorable, for good or for ill.
Oh, btw, Grassley isn't trying to salvage the nomination; as far as he is concerned it is still a done deal. He's trying to limit the damage to GOP Senators' next elections after they confirm him.
