Wyoming county pulls funds as bank alters fossil fuel stance

Source: Associated Press

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. (AP) — A county in Wyoming is withdrawing funds from a national bank to protest its policy change concerning the financing of some coal, oil and natural gas projects.

San Francisco-based Bank of the West recently announced the change that has stoked anger in the Rocky Mountain region, where fossil fuels are an important part of the economy.

Bank officials say they don't oppose the fossil fuels industry but advocate for its transition to renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Sweetwater County in Wyoming has several major gas-drilling areas. It says it is on schedule to withdraw its funds from the bank by Oct. 1.

I recommend they publically burn their deposit books as a public protest. That will teach them! Fred Sanders Sep 2018 #5

Well, if they continue to allow gas-drilling, which I would guess involves fracking, there won't be any sweet water left a few years from now.

Our water came from wells and smelled strongly of sulfur. That shit wasn’t even a little bit sweet. After a shower I would smell like a matchhead.

In the electric generating world no one is going to finance a new coal of oil project when wind, solar and natural gas are cheaper options. That's how capitalist markets are supposed to work; do more with less.

It’s just trona mines and gas and oil wells. Truckstops the size of small towns. Year-round fireworks stands.

The only nice things I remember from growing up there were a couple of small archeological sites and an area where some very nicely-preserved petroglyphs can be found.
