Iowans Send Message to Obama
Source: ABC News
SIOUX CITY, Iowa - President Obama received a less than warm welcome and a warning upon arrival at the airport here on the second stop of his Iowa visit, which was aimed at recapturing some of the magic the state gave his run to the White House in 2008.
Greeting Air Force One as it touched down under sunny skies and sultry heat was a hand-painted banner draped across the top of an airplane hangar that reads, "Obama Welcome to SUX - We Did Build This." "SUX" is the airport code for Sioux City.
The message appeared to be a response President Obama's "you didn't build that" remark from a July campaign rally, when he was trying to explain that government - not businesses - constructed public infrastructure on which the economy relies. Republicans have used the four words to attack Obama as out of touch with the realities of owning and operating a small business.
The banner is a reminder that this part of the state remains hotly contested turf for both Obama and his Republican rival Mitt Romney, just as the campaign enters the home stretch.

(3,596 posts)People who have little education, knowledge, awareness, etc. are threatened by someone who exhibits those qualities. I suspect those that penned this sign make < 40K a year, may or may not have a high school diploma, see little future for themselves. While they should be embracing Obama as someone who wants to provide them with job retraining and job placement, they buy into the GOP lies.
I have never understood the 99% ever voting Republican. Republicans only care about the 1%. But some people are clueless.

(10,857 posts)There's a reason Iowa is called a "flyover state." If the federal government hadn't built it, it very likely wouldn't have been built at all.

(6,045 posts)Did ABC mention that at all in their article? HELL NO! Neither did they tell the truth about the damn "You didn't build that" comment taken out context! It really pisses me off how the press operates!!

(336 posts)As I understand it (OK, just googled it) it was originally a military airbase.
But they certainly didn't build the ROADS that Obama was actually talking about in that speech that they so pitifully refuse to understand.

(19,458 posts)I gotta give the MSM props for at least trying to set the record straight on that huge lie, and the welfare lie, and the auto plant lie, and the rest. It's been refreshing to see some actual balanced reporting this time around.
But.. they REALLY needed to mention the 10k people that showed up to the see the President.
Really hoping that someone gets fired over that sign. If that's on airport property, they do not own that building... they are leasing it, and I don't think it will go over well. I mean nice way to showcase your town, assholes.

(30,058 posts)So it has been built from tax payers and proof they did not build the airport. I am beginning to think I could never be a repub, I'm not smart but not dumb enough to belong to their party. If you are smart then you will never believe their dumb lies.

(24,411 posts)Ok...so many points to be made. This story--and it's misleading headline--are grossly unfair to Obama.
First, Sioux City, Iowa is located in the most arch-conservative part of Iowa. The city is in the NW corner of the state and is is known for its vicious tea-party mentality. The crazy Congressman Steve King represents this part of Iowa. It is a pocket that certainly does not represent the entire state of Iowa.
Please remember that gay marriage is legal here in Iowa. Also, Iowa was the first state to vote in the Democratic primary--and in '08 Barack Obama won every single county in Iowa, beating favorites Hillary Clinton and John Edwards. So Iowa is pretty progressive, as a whole. Suggesting that one dign from one tea partier is a message from a state gets my vote for gross overstatement of the campaign season.
Also, I was at President Obama's speech today in Urbandale, Iowa. Ten thousand Iowans showed up! Ten thousand very enthusiastic, happy Iowans stood in the sun for six hours to see the President.
I'd say that this successful event in Urbandale is more of a "message" than some guy playing smart ass with a Sharpie marker, wouldn't you?
Also, I'd like to point out how incredible it is that President Obama went to Sioux City. Most politicians stick to areas that are brimming with their supporters. Obama going to Sioux City is like Romney going to San Francisco. I think it shows incredible character and integrity that the President went to a tea-party stronghold and that he showed up at a local pizza joint and was willing to have an honest conversatknowing Steve King territory!
So let's talk about where Mitt Romney has been in Iowa lately, shall we? Whereas Obama speaks at rallies in front if 10,000 people--Romney hides from "We the People." Romney's last Iowa event was a closed-door, private affair at the Glen Oaks Country Club in Des Moines--the most exclusive, private country club in the state of Iowa. Some paid upward of $5,000 to attend this event which was closed to the public. No television cameras were allowed.
So yes, maybe some Glenn Beck fan-boy made a sign and put it on a roof--but at least President Obama has the guts and the courage to get out there and reach out to all citizens and honestly fight for their votes. Even though Obama know that Sioux City is far-right territory, he campaigns there anyway. Meanwhile, Romney hides behind ice sculptures at the country club!
This article is unfair. The headline is inaccurate; and this reporter doesn't know a damn thing about the real message that Iowans are sending President Obama. Ten thousand people showing up for a rally is a clear message that some reporter just didn't want to see!

(7,403 posts)About public infrastructure being the underpinning of commerce. Without this public airport, financed by taxpayers, there would be no need for an airplane hanger -- whether it is on airport property or on adjacent private land.

(4,802 posts)Please, tell these idiots they are idiots.. Who built this airport. Originally, the US Army in WWII . Now it is owned by the city of Sux.. Should this airport be falling apart . Blame it on the Gobbers.. They are doing all in their power to end the Aviation Trust fund, used to modernize and make more safe our airports. You want the Gobbers in power. Remember that when you have longer lines at the airports. And or find out needed renovations needed to make aviation more safe are postponed

How many people will know when they see that image what SUX is they're referencing?
There's so much potential there.
