WASHINGTON (AP) The Latest on the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh (all times local): 8:15 PM
The Justice Department says the sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh does not involve any potential federal crime for the FBI to investigate.
The department said in a statement Monday night that the FBIs role during background investigations is to evaluate whether the nominee could pose a national security risk and then provide that information for the use of the decision makers.
The department says its not the job of the FBI to judge the significance or the credibility of an accusation.

There's also the statute of limitations involved here.
The FBI's 'job' in this particular case ... is exactly what they said it is.

The opening sentences conflate two separate questions: is there a potential federal crime contained within the accusation, and does the nominee have stuff in their background which poses a national security risk.
But whatever the answer is to the first part, in the case of the second part the answer is clearly YES.
Because, you know, TRYING TO RAPE GIRLS is what some funny-talking foreigners call "kompromat."
