President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the FBI is not following up on professor Christine Blasey Fords sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh because this is not really their thing.
I dont think the FBI should really be involved because they dont want to be involved, Trump said. If they wanted to be, I would certainly do that. But they say this is not really their thing. I think politically speaking, the senators will do a very good job.
According to a Bloomberg report, the FBI requires a request from the White House to conduct a follow-up investigation on the accusation.
The White House and Department of Justice, on the other hand, argue that its not the FBIs job.
Senate Democrats are clamoring for the investigation, but the White House and Republican senators have been dismissive.

(52,243 posts)not because of any law enforcement matter, but simply because background investigations of federal nominees is a routine task for the fbi and allegations like this are well within their purview.
if donnie didn't tell them not to, they would most certainly be investigating it.

(23,319 posts)to re-open HRC's bogus email investigation resulting in derailing her campaign at the last minute. Does the FBI get to pick and choose their "thing" de jour? I'm having a tough time supporting the mission of the FBI at the moment....whatever their "mission" is.
Is it possible the FBI might be pressured to turn a blind eye to Kavananaugh's past?

(976 posts)From the point of view of the FBI, if criminal charges cannot be brought then there is no reason to have an investigation.

(129,064 posts)i.e., a crime committed across state/territory lines, then it should be a state/local matter versus a federal one. I.e., the state of MD should be involved (and city of Bethesda since that is where both apparently lived at the time).
john657
(1,058 posts)That's exactly right, the FBI has no jurisdiction to investigate a state crime, it's up to the State of Maryland to open an investigation and after 36 years, it just isn't going to happen.

(2,574 posts)Aren't they the agency that is already charged with this responsibility? They obviously missed something very important in checking out Kavanaugh for Circuit Court that is now coming up in his SCOTUS hearing.
I think the public presumption is that any SCOTUS nominee has been thoroughly investigated and cleared by the FBI. That
a witness comes forward during the hearing with new info should not mean that the FBI does not have the responsibility already to
investigate those charges. Or their investigation then becomes not thorough, not reliable.
This Senate Hearing is not a criminal or court proceeding...tho it can lead to one (i.e. charges of perjury ag Kavanaugh) Right now
this is a job interview with the expectation that the FBI supplies the most comprehensive background history possible to
facilitate the "advise and consent" Senate vote for this job seeker to obtain his seat on SCOTUS.
I don't really see why the FBI needs to be reassigned to their Kavanaugh investigation by the Republicans or the DOJ or the President. It seems like they already have an investigation file open on Kavanaugh, they just need to update it.

(1,080 posts)NO CRIMINAL CHARGES CAN BE BROUGHT, it has been 36 years and it was a stroke and grope party with beer from Moms fridge.
As a progressive who grew up in DC in the 80s, this makes everyone look BAD. It was HIGH SCHOOL.

(29,322 posts)That brought trauma to the woman. This makes Kavanaugh look bad plus they do background checks all the time. Doesn't mean he should sit on the Supreme Courts FFS.
