Paul Ryan trips over marathon question
Source: ABC news
Hewitt asked the vice presidential candidate whether he is still running.
Ryan answered that he hurt a disc in his back, so he doesnt run marathons anymore. Instead, he said. he just runs 10 miles or less.
The conservative radio host then asked him what his personal best time is. For a marathoner this is a badge of honor, but Ryan couldnt recall exactly.
Under three, high twos. I had a two hour and fifty-something, Ryan said.
Hewitt was surprised, saying, Holy smokes.
Ryan replied: I was fast when I was younger, yeah.
But it turns out, hes only run one and it wasnt under three hours or even under four hours.
The Ryan campaign told Runners World magazine that the House Budget Chairman ran one marathon in 1990 when he was 20 years old. That was the Grandmas Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota. The running magazine reports he finished in 4 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds.

In the Beginning
Grandma's Marathon began in 1977 when a group of local runners planned a scenic road race from Two Harbors to Duluth, Minnesota. There were just 150 participants that year, but organizers knew they had discovered something special. The marathon received its name from the Duluth-based group of famous Grandma's restaurants its first major sponsor. The level of sponsorship with the restaurants has changed, but the race has retained its name. Grandma's Marathon is now a self-governed nonprofit organization with a 17-member board of directors. Grandma's Marathon weekend draws more than 17,000 participants for its three-race event each June.

(28,158 posts)Silly, petty lies to make him feel bigger make no sense. What they do is cast his character into a dim light.
This was such a foolish thing to lie about. It's the sort of thing a jerk at a bar would say to try and impress a woman with his fake awesomeness.

(509 posts)Sorry i don't buy that one either. If you have a bad back why would you run 10 miles- but not 26.2? This guy has serious psychological problems. Nobody ever calls BS on this liar? That will change now!

(182,851 posts)You don't just "get in" a 10 miler - that is still a LONG run both in distance and in time AND on the body. I haven't done 10 since I was training for the Richmond marathon last year because you have to work into that.
Not knowing his PR or at least getting close to it is also a red flag. Mine is 4:30 - I ran that at about 250 lbs - and every marathoner can talk for hours about almost each of their runs. Those are days of your life that you will never forget.
NOW I am offended by Ryan. Don't lie about "marathonS" take pride in your one but don't say you've run multiple.
For the record I have started 5 but only finished 4 - I just couldn't do the last 10 MILES on one of them - Last November in my last complete marathon I walked the last 7 miles due to cramping.

(14,566 posts)I have run 10 Ks, and I am SLOW.
My best time broke a 42 minute - I have no need to say I ran a sub 30 minute 10 K, I am just happy to say I drug my butt around it in whatever time I do it in.

So there, Paul Ryan, with your cheesy sub-three marathon claim. You're obviously not leader material.

(7,403 posts)My longest run has been a half-marathon, as a 40-year old, and my pace would have extended out to 3 1/2 hours for a full marathon -- though I presume that a 2nd half would be a little slower but still would have been under 4 hours. Either Ryan didn't train for the distance or he was a pretty slow runner for a 20 year old so he told not one but two lies about his marathon. By the way, a bad back would impact a 7 mile run about as much as a marathon. It would also impact many forms of resistance training as well so even his bad back claim is suspect.

Had Obama blatantly LIED about a marathon just after he gave a speech full of LIES you bet the press would be calling him out...Not gonna happen when it is a nice looking white guy calling for lower taxes for the wealthy!!
