Trump suggested Spain build a wall in the Sahara: report
BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO - 09/19/18 03:45 PM EDT
President Trump reportedly suggested to Spain's foreign minister that the country could build a wall across the Sahara in order to manage Mediterranean migration.
The Guardian reported Wednesday that Spain's foreign minister Josep Borrell said Trump made the suggestion during a previous meeting and that the president added, "The Sahara border can't be bigger than our border with Mexico."
The Sahara desert is approximately 3,000 miles wide from east to west, or about 1,000 miles longer than the U.S. border with Mexico. It extends beyond Spain's borders.
Trump's reported suggestion may have been made when King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the White House in June accompanied by Borrell. ... Spain has overtaken Italy and Greece as the main destination for migrants crossing the Mediterranean this year, with more than 33,600 arriving by sea so far, according to the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations migration agency.

Let's try this again, now with a legit source.
I had started a thread in LBN earlier today, but the only source was the questionable Express. I moved the thread to GD.

(5,528 posts)It isn't even on the same continent. Why would anyone believe that Spain has the right to build such a wall even if it did make sense politically and logically

(1,345 posts)What does it mean that the Sahara desert "extends beyond Spain's borders"?
I'm confused why the Hill doesn't state the obvious, that the Sahara desert is not on the same continent as Spain. It makes me thing I'm missing something but I don't think I am.

Apparently no one told Trump there's a goddamn ocean between Spain and the Sahara.

There is the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Africa.
Words fail me for how idiotic this is.
I mean, little kids writing into XKCD ask things on this level of Randall Munroe, but they're in the single-digits. It's CUTE to ask how a fireman's pole between the Earth and the Moon would work... when the kid is 5!

Since this is in reference to Spain, Trump may have had the tiny Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern shores of Morocco's Mediterranean coast in mind.
Migrants who make it from Morocco into these two areas then have access to Europe,
having gained access to Spanish territory.
"Increasingly Ceuta and Melilla's heavily fortified borders have come under pressure from African migrants seeking a better life in Europe."

"Some 1,000 African migrants who stormed a razor-wire border fence between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla were repelled by police."

(6,831 posts)Trump barely understands American geography. I doubt that he could even locate Spain on the map, much less Ceuta and Melilla, or Morocco. Or the Sahara.
Remember Nambia ?

(66 posts)That logistically, Spain could build a wall on foreign soil to stem the flow of African immigrants.
Exactly how many are crossing the freaking Sahara without a wall now??
This is totally a Yeti Pube idea. A wall in a place that has no use.
