Louisiana attorney general to ask Sessions to break up Google, Facebook, Twitter
Source: Mercury News
Political momentum for a crackdown on Silicon Valleys social media giants got a boost this week when a state attorney general said he would tell U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions next week that Google, Facebook and Twitter should be broken up.
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry wants the federal government to do to the social media firms what it did to Standard Oil in 1911, according to a Louisiana newspaper report Tuesday.
The government smashed up Standard using antitrust laws, forcing it to break into 34 business pieces. Landry is accusing the tech behemoths of suppressing conservative views and stifling competition, on top of infringing on antitrust laws, The Advocate reported.
This cant be fixed legislatively, Landry told the paper. We need to go to court with an antitrust suit.

(26,337 posts)Breaking up Google is stupid because its just a website that conducts searches largely and people are choosing to use it even though there are alternatives just like there are alternatives to Twitter and Facebook.

(9,696 posts)google has gmail, google maps (the cars that drive around maping us), and google docs to name a few. google basically wants to own the internet. google is mining user experiences every minute of every day. If you browse at a store and then see an ad for the exact thing you were browsing for, that's google.
googles motto of "don't be evil" isn't saying they aren't evil, it's admonishing us not to be evil.
I would love to see google broken up, they have way to much information and power. Same for facebook. twitter, I don't know how much information they collect so can't comment.
It would be ironic if for all the help FB and google gave trumpft to be broken up by trumpft.
