The Latest: GOP hires female attorney for Kavanaugh hearing
Source: AP
12:20 p.m.
Republicans have hired a female attorney to handle questioning during this weeks hearing with Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
The attorneys name has not been released. The hire was confirmed by a GOP aide to the Senate Judiciary Committee who was not authorized to speak publicly.
Fords lawyers have objected to Republicans hiring someone they call an experienced sex crimes prosecutor. They say the move is inconsistent with the GOP pledge to avoid a circus.
Attorney Michael R. Bromwich asked Republicans for the name of the attorney and the opportunity to meet with her before Thursdays hearing.

(14,078 posts)Normally, each individual senator gets a few minutes to ask questions and then the floor passes to another senator. This really limits the ability of any one senator to build a significant case - they don't have the time. But, with one questioner, even if her time is interrupted as it is passed to a democratic senator, she can build the better case by building a narrative across the entire hearing, where the democrats will not have that ability.
If the republicans are going to use one questioner, I think the democrats should use one questioner too. I do believe one questioner with extensive time can do better than a series of individuals all trying to emphasize different points.

(15,805 posts)In the United States the right to petition is guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which specifically prohibits Congress from abridging "the right of the people...to petition the Government for a redress of grievances".

Ford has a right to ask the actual governmental body of elected officials to solve a problem, and they agreed. The Senate cannot shirk their Constitutional obligations and deny her petition by farming out their duties to a non-governmental facsimile to avoid making a decision that might make them looks like the idiots and fools that that really are.
