A provision that would have punished states for protecting LGBTQ adoptive and foster parents has failed in the House.
In July, Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee attached the Aderholt amendment, which would have banned states from enforcing anti-discrimination laws if they conflicted with an adoption agencys religious beliefs, to a funding bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education.
Yesterday, though, the Aderholt amendment was dropped in negotiations between the House and the Senate, and the House passed the budget measure without it. The amendment faced strong opposition from Senate Democrats.
Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) said, I was proud to fight to ensure that the Aderholt amendment which would have inserted bigotry and discrimination into our foster care and adoption systems was removed from this years Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education funding bill.

(1,358 posts)My wife and I adopted both of our children (one domestically and the other internationally) and I believe that ANYONE who wants to adopt a child and/or children - as long as they pass the background checks - should be encouraged to do so.
Thank you for posting this.

(36,886 posts)Right wingers claim that kids deserve a mommy and a daddy.
Ask them how many straight couples in their church are willing to adopt these kids.
There are enough Christian couples that there would be no children needing adoption if those folks would step up to the plate.

(53,976 posts)"The amendment I offered today (Wednesday) and which was approved by the House Appropriations Committee, will address two serious problems currently facing our nation. First, the current opioid epidemic has caused the number of children in foster care across America to skyrocket. Here in Alabama, we have seen a 30% increase in just the last four years. These are children who are in desperate need of finding forever families.
Secondly, several states and localities across the country are not allowing religious organizations, such as Catholic Charities and Bethany Christian Services, to operate child welfare agencies. The reason for this is simply because these organizations, based on religious conviction, choose not to place children with same-sex couples.
