Judge Denies Request to Block Presidential Cell Phone Alert
Source: Bloomberg
Americans will get a cell phone alert from President Donald Trump Wednesday as planned.
A U.S. judge in New York rejected a request to block the alert from three New Yorkers who claim its a violation of the constitutional protection to be free from government-compelled listening.
A test of the alert system is scheduled for 2:18 p.m. New York time on Wednesday.

(115,836 posts)It's called a "presidential" message, which Trump probably wanted it to be called to make himself seem more important, but it's just a test and will not contain a personal message from Trump.

It wasn't a big deal. Message came, I cleared it, and that was it. People are making way more of out of than it needs to be. Ignore them, unless something has been happening. But, really, anything that's going to matter to you is going to show up on the news anyway.
I did picture getting random messages like "No Collusion!" at 3am. I know it won't happen, but it's a funny thought.

(129,444 posts)that he personally uses twitter for all sorts of nonsense and policy positions. However I and others have posted over and over that this "alert" thing involves the use of a COMPUTER SYSTEM that someone logs into, goes through a series of steps, and after verification, sends a templated (standard) "message".
Edit to add - I posted elsewhere but here is what is basically required to actually get in and send a message -
The disastrous false alarm issued by Hawaii over the weekend has raised concerns about what safeguards the state had in place. The state-wide alert, which told people a ballistic missile was about to hit, terrified residents and visitors, as the state scrambled for 38 minutes to issue a correction.
Officials soon released a timeline of events, saying the states software contained a menu option that allowed a live alert to be sent in place of a test, a problem that several people quickly categorized as a design failure. The state released an image that showed a list with options for test and live alerts next to each other. Officials later said the image did not accurately portray the system, and released what it characterized as a representation of the system, but said that it could not share an actual screenshot.
While the state has not named its software provider, evidence suggests it is an Idaho-based company called AlertSense, a FEMA-approved company that says it works with clients in states around the country. The audio version of the alert broadcast in Hawaii was posted on the companys website. The first image released by Hawaii also appears similar to example software provided to The Verge by AlertSense. For instance, the word templates appears above the alert options in AlertSenses software, and is barely visible in the first image issued by the state. (A local TV station in Hawaii independently came to the same conclusion.) The Verges review of the program suggests that functionally there is only a one-click difference between sending a test and a live alert.

(10,952 posts)As I told Senator Langford (yes I know it is a waste of time but I do try from time to time): While I may not have always agreed with who sits in the White House, I would have always expected a sitting President to use such a warning system such as this appropriately. But I cannot say the same for Trump due to his lack of impulse control and tendency to rage tweet. People do not trust Trump to have access to any type of countrywide tweet platform because you just don't know what he is truly capable of.
I indicated that I would prefer to opt out as long as he in the WH.
You may call it a non-story but with the way this country is going:
1. Racist, misogynist, lying, etc. POS in the Oval Office
2., Dominionist in the VP office
3. Republican Controlled Congress not willing to uphold the law, routinely ignores the Constitution
4. Judicial System being taken over by the hard right, political extremists
5. Continued to privatize the prison system
6. Immigrant children being permanently ripped away from their families
7. Poor people stuck in poverty
8. Middle Class perpetually struggling
9. Wealth continually turned over the 1% and Corporations at the expense of clear air, clean water, safe food, protection of endangered species and so on.
10. Etc. Etc. Etc.
What could possibly go wrong?

(10,064 posts)I already get text message alerts for local weather-related issues such as tornado sightings or flood warnings. Why do I need an alert from FEMA telling me that a hurricane is coming toward the East Coast when I live in Texas? I keep thinking of the War of the Worlds broadcast, though the claimed panic has been debunked. The potential to cause mass disruption is there with such a nationwide system. And a lot of the distrust relates to Trump because FEMA staff report to him and they will do what he tells them to do.

(5,771 posts).... radio stations broadcast a buzzing sound as a "test of the national emergency broadcast system". I believe it is a relec of the cold war civil defense. It seems to me this is justan extension of that.

(11,971 posts)Repeal the entire 2015 law and demand that these warnings are to be prohibited. That way you don't have to be concerned with them in the future. Of course some day there may actually be a national emergency, but people will figure it out anyway

(4,787 posts)The law was called the Warning, Alert and Response Network (WARN) Act. It was passed in 2006; the 'Wireless Emergency Alerts system' itself became operational in 2012. I believe they were mandated to eventually do a test of it. Thus today's event which, in normal circumstances, would be perfectly logical.
When the FCC put out information about this in 2013, right-wingers like Alex Jones freaked out. Here's a MaddowBlog post on the 2013 version of this hysteria: http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/remember-who-passed-the-warn-act
They'll probably change the name eventually, and hope no one notices.

It expressly requires that the nationwide system be tested within 3 years of the law's enactment. We've been justifiably critical of FEMA for not being prepared, so I'm not going to dump on them for actually testing the system to see if it works properly.

(65,168 posts)As someone said above, a terrorist attack in LA while i'm driving my car in northeast Illinois is not likely to change my plans, as horrible as such an attack might be.
And if someone launches a nuke at Chicago and i get this extra special warning, what am i supposed to do? There isn't time to get away from it, and actually it might be wiser to drive under the warheads. 100 microseconds of bright light and i'm an ion cloud.
Also as someone said above, this is a silly holdover of the cold war where people actually thought a nuclear war was easily survivable and the absurd notion that the USSR would attack first as if they had no self-preservation instinct of their own.
The whole idea just seem stupid and pointless.

(10,856 posts)...to do?"
If you really want a answer, find a manhole cover, get it open, climb down, close lid, after the blast has past you have up to a hour before radiation levels start to rise dramatically as the radioactive dust starts to fall to the ground, use that time to get out of the area or into a deep basement with several floors above you or anything that will have 3 feet of dirt above you. Even crawling deep into a culvert might get you thru the blast also depending on the breaks. Obviously if you are withing the crater range of ground zero you will be toast but further out this will save you.
(2 bolts wired together with a space in between them is what you need to get the manhole cover open, stick one thru the hole in the manhole cover and lift with the other one.)
