ISTANBUL Turkey has concluded that Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent journalist from Saudi Arabia, was killed in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul earlier this week by a Saudi team sent specifically for the murder, two people with knowledge of the probe said Saturday.
Turkish investigators believe a 15-member team came from Saudi Arabia. It was a preplanned murder, said one of the people. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.
They offered no specific evidence to back up the account. Earlier Saturday, however, Turkeys Anadolu news agency said the Istanbul public prosecutors office had opened a probe into Khashoggis disappearance. Turkish authorities have said that Khashoggi never left the consulate.
Saudi Arabia had vehemently denied that Khashoggi, who also contributed to The Washington Posts Global Opinions section, was detained after he entered the mission.

Saudi CP MBS and FM al-Jubeir: You need to find/release my friend Jamal Khashoggi, who went missing in Saudi Istanbul consulate. It will be disastrous for your diplomacy if hes been abducted.

by Josh Lederman and Ayman Mohyeldin / Oct.06.2018 / 6:59 PM CDT
Turkish authorities believe that journalist and Saudi Arabia critic Jamal Khashoggi, who disappeared in Turkey last week, was killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, a senior Turkish official and another regional diplomat told NBC News.
The Washington Post, which published Khashoggis work, reported Saturday that Turkey believed he was killed by a Saudi kill team, citing two people with knowledge of the investigation.
Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who writes an opinion column for The Washington Post, disappeared last week after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkeys largest city and hasnt been seen since. Saudi Arabias government has said Khashoggi left the consulate building and that theyre looking into what happened to him afterward, while Turkey had said previously it believed Khashoggi was still in the consulate.
The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul, the Turkish official told NBC News on Saturday. We believe that the murder was premeditated and the body was subsequently moved out of the consulate.

(22,166 posts)should one be in disagreement w/ one's home government? They might get murdered.
Proving it will be difficult but the word is out now. If you're a media type, don't trust your own consulates or embassies for anything.
rump is good friends w/ the Saudi although they turned down rumps' request to pump more oil to bring oil prices down. Rump needs to be firm w/ the Saudi if they are going to get in the habit of killing their opposition in this manner e.g., don't kill them, and/or take this issue up w/ the United Nations. I doubt anything will ever come of this, too much money at sake. A sorry state of affairs.

(101,361 posts)Two Turkish officials claimed to Reuters that Khashoggi, 59, had been killed. The Reuters claim was circulated by a government spokesman, and confirmed by numerous other officials, some of whom claimed to have knowledge of how the body had been disposed of. Several officials alleged, without tabling evidence, that Khashoggi had first been tortured.
Officials believe that a team of 15 Saudis arrived on Tuesday to conduct the killing, then left the country soon afterwards.
The president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is expected to release a statement about the incident on Sunday. Aside from summonsing the Saudi ambassador in Ankara, senior officials had remained mute about Khashoggis fate, leading to speculation that he had been smuggled out of the country with Turkish consent.

(91 posts)to his critics at home and abroad.
It's not the ordinary Saudis who he's directly targeting. It's anyone in any position to threaten him. It's the same playbook as Putin and any other vicious autocrat - "this is what happens when you speak out against me, anywhere in the world."
For ordinary Saudis, the message is: These critics are traitors, and I am your protector against traitors. Again, same playbook as Putin and others of his ilk.
And yes, it can happen here.
