More than 120 missing children found in Michigan human trafficking sting
Source: Houston Chronicle
More than 120 children were recovered in Detroit as part of an initiative to find victims of sex trafficking, according to officials.
The U.S. Marshals Service found 123 children on Sept. 26 out of the total 301 cases they were investigating.
All the children who were recovered were interviewed by authorities. Investigators said at least three of the children showed signs that they were victims of sex trafficking or sexually victimized.
The sweep took place over the course of one day in Wayne County, Michigan.

That must be part of Putin's Kompromat stash against this president.
The other part no doubt has something to do with Ivanka, and that Electra complex of hers.

(62,444 posts)Did you actually read the information at the link you posted? None of them were missing.
All 123 children were physically located and interviewed -- standard protocol for the Michigan State Police. All of the children located were interviewed about potentially being sexually victimized or used in a sex trafficking ring during their period of time that they were deemed missing. Three cases were identified as being possible sex trafficking cases, and one homeless teen was transported back to the command post after it was discovered that he had not had anything to eat in three days.
This was an exercise in updating files.
This notion that a cache of 123 trafficked children was found and, tellingly, no one arrested, is utter nonsense which people are prone to believe and get hysterical over.
This is how shit like Pizzagate or "Satanic Panic" gets going.
SunSeeker
(51,567 posts)So obviously all 123 were listed (officially, in files) as missing kids. Most kids don't admit they were used as prostitutes. Three here apparently did admit to it, which is a lot. One kid is a lot. Sorry the story wasn't gruesome enough for you.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)And it may be exaggerated in part due to the way that the information was provided in a press release by the Michigan State Police. Police agencies, while certainly necessary to public order, do have political and public relations interests.
What appears to have mainly happened here is an administrative housecleaning of files which were not properly closed.
It's really not a matter of the story not being "gruesome enough" for me. It is that someone apparently has tried very hard, and succeeded, in making the work of the Michigan State Police in closing these files, out to be something quite a bit more heroic than is reasonably supported by the facts.
I just wonder why that might be.
And as for the the three who "admitted to it", that would also seem to go beyond the facts actually stated in the piece.

(51,567 posts)Like I said, I hope they find the help they need.
jberryhill
(62,444 posts)Thats the point. Thats not what happened. Most of them were where they were supposed to be. This was primarily a file management issue, not a missing kid issue.
SunSeeker
(51,567 posts)It sure as fuck wasn't just file management to the kid who hadn't eaten in three days, or the 3 kids who said stuff in their interviews suggesting they were trafficked.
But hey, you can poo poo this all you want. You are obviously sure of your reasons.

This has got to be the most misleading headline of the year.

(1,204 posts)or trafficked. I interpreted that as meaning they were runaways or something along those lines.
The headline is incredibly misleading, though
*edit* Oh, I see it wasn't even that. They just didn't update their record. This is gonna be some great fodder for the "pizzagate" crowd.

(498 posts)This wasn't 123 children recovered from human trafficking.
This was 123 children someone reported missing. Three of the children showed signs of sex trafficking/sex victimization.
They don't give details on what was going on.
The other 120 could be 17 years old and fleeing from bad home situations and staying at a friend's house. There's no real details.
"Participating officers were given the case files and began investigating their whereabouts by visiting last known addresses, friends homes and schools in hopes of finding them in a safe place."
Then... "123 were identified and recovered safely during the operation. All 123 children were physically located and interviewed"
So... these weren't 123 children all held together by a human trafficking ring. They were 123 separate people who were located, interviewed and not actually reunited with family or anything like that. If they were young kids then they would have said they were reunited or something.

Maybe not.

(1,204 posts)To get the actual details it required reading the actual report located elsewhere. Although, in their credit they did at least link to it in the story.
SunSeeker
(51,567 posts)What is evident is they were all runaways or reported missing. And at least three indicated in interviews they may have been involved in sex trafficking. They were all listed in missing children files.
These kids definitely need help, either as sex trafficking victims or as runaways who may be fleeing abuse, or suffering substance addiction. One kid said he hadn't eaten in 3 days.
Sorry the story did not have enough gory facts for you.

(767 posts)The missing information does not make this story true. Where were these people found, where were they from, and the ages. This story has missing facts which needed to be told. I think many of the people were run always who attended school and were not truly MISSING. Good story, but fake news because of the missing information........
Chemisse
(30,813 posts)At first it seemed to me that they were all found together in one place, being held by sex traffickers.
But reading between the lines, it seems like they are kids who have left home and are living out on the streets or in various places and a scant few are being sexually victimized.
This doesn't sound like a new phenomena, just a new technique of rounding them up and bringing them in.

(62,444 posts)"All 123 children were physically located and interviewed"
This story is being sold as something it isn't. It sounds like they closed a bunch of files by finding out where various teenagers had gotten off to.

Another "human trafficking operation" that wasn't. One hundred and twenty-three missing Michigan minors were found during a one-day "sex trafficking operation," the New York Post reported yesterday. Similar statements showed up in other news headlines across national and international news. What the associated articles fail to mention for multiple paragraphs is that only three of the minors are even suspected of having been involved in prostitution.
Officials said the operationa joint effort of the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, Michigan State Police, and multiple local Michigan police departmentsidentified three "possible sex-trafficking cases" among the 123 minors that were located on September 26, according to a press release.
What's more, all but four of the "missing children" were not actually missing. In the remaining cases, minors were listed in a police database as missing but had since been found or returned home on their own. "Many were (homeschooled)," Lt. Michael Shaw told The Detroit News. "Some were runaways as well."
The one-day "rescue" sweep was a long-time in the making, with police beforehand "investigating their whereabouts by visiting last known addresses, friend's homes and schools." ... Nothing in the U.S. Marshals report on the operation makes mention of any arrested kidnappers, "traffickers," or other adults involved in endangering or exploiting any of the missing minors that were identified. Which makes sensevery few missing children are actually abducted. And when runaway teens do engage in sex for money, the vast majority do not have "pimps."

I am glad they found the homeless kid who hadn't eaten and the three kids who were being trafficked.
But if this can be done in the course of a work day, why the hell wasn't it done before this?
What the hell is the deal with this?
SunSeeker
(51,567 posts)Lack of resources, and lack of will.
They started with 300 or so, and found 120+ in one day. We don't know anything about the remaining 180.

(50,954 posts)I know that's not literal, but really! If almost half were this easily found, what is going on here? Three of those children were being trafficked and one hadn't eaten in three days. Imagine what they could have been spared if this had been done before!
