Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) said Tuesday that he would not allow a Supreme Court vacancy to be filled in 2020, a position that puts him at odds with the Senates top Republican on an issue that has inflamed partisan tensions for more than two years.
In an interview with Fox News Channels Martha MacCallum, Grassley was asked whether he believes the Senate should take up a hypothetical Supreme Court nomination during 2020, when President Trump will be up for reelection.
If Im chairman, they wont take it up, said Grassley, whose committee is charged with holding hearings on Supreme Court nominees. No, because I pledged that in 2016, that if the balls the same as it is. Now, if somebody else is the chairman of the committee, theyll have to decide for themselves. But thats a decision I made a long time ago.
In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blocked the consideration of President Obamas third nominee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland. At the time, McConnell said he was blocking Garland because voters should have a say in the courts direction on Election Day. The move infuriated Democrats, who accused Republicans of abandoning their constitutional duty to advise and consent.

(2,596 posts)Seriously, these old coots (and the Dems have them too, but I at least like their politics) are ancient. I would think that somebody like Grassley would be considering what befell his colleague McCain. Nobody is guaranteed greater longevity or good health. They're not a given. The guy could stroke out tomorrow, along with any of his fellow rethugs. And, frankly, I'm not a well-wisher of this reprehensible and politically odious old shit bag. I can't be. Nor should anyone else. These odious freaks have no good will or wishes for anyone not one of them. They mean all "others" harm in some manner or another, so no one who isn't them or like them should understand that this is a full out war between "them" and "us". For them, this is a zero sum game pure and simple. And no one can afford to think that the rules of fair play will ever be in effect while they're in control of everything that happens in this country that is approaching its historical nadir at this dark moment in time.

(810 posts)No way do I believe this. Hopefully, Trump and his enablers will be in jail by then and the Republican party will be a shriveled up, powerless shell of its former self.
