Senate defeats measure to overturn Trump expansion of non-ObamaCare plans

Source: The Hill

BY PETER SULLIVAN - 10/10/18 12:27 PM EDT

he Senate on Wednesday defeated a Democratic measure to overrule President Trump’s expansion of non-ObamaCare insurance plans as Democrats seek to highlight health care ahead of the midterm elections.

The Democratic measure would have overruled Trump’s expansion of short-term health insurance plans, which do not have to cover people with pre-existing conditions or cover a range of health services like mental health or prescription drugs.

It was defeated on an extremely narrow, mostly party line 50-50 vote, with Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) voting with Democrats in favor of overturning the short-term plans. Republicans argue the short-term plans simply provide a cheaper option alongside more comprehensive ObamaCare plans.

Democrats forced the vote ahead of the midterms in an attempt to put health care front and center in the campaign. Democrats said Republicans voting to keep in place these “junk” insurance plans that do not have to cover pre-existing conditions was another example they can use to paint the GOP as wrong on health care.

I've long maintained that deep down she's always been closer to right wingers like Mitch McConnell than she was to Senators like Olympia Snowe. I'm not sure what she thinks she's gaining by continuing with the "moderate" schtick.

And her bizarre convoluted explanation for her vote on Kavanaugh was laughable if it weren’t so serious. No one is going to forget what she has done. Maybe she should think about “term limiting” herself... 😉

Gosh...couldn't imagine a person like Trump LYING about something as serious as your health care covering PE conditions.

Plenty of fodder for campaign ads in the next few weeks. McConnell must have been hung over from the Kavanaugh beer blast to have let this vote happen.

Not complaining, exactly, and the article makes it clear, but I feel like I'm lost in Quadruple-Negative Land.

At first I said "bad", then after reading it 3 times I said "good". If the moron's cult buys his BS, then they deserve the insurance they get. I think a lot of the GOP voters who thought Obamacare and the ACA were two separate things due to believing everything Fux Ruse and lying GOP politicians learned their lesson when they realized their health care was going to be taken from them. Not until it effects them personally do they give a damn, then it's too late sometimes. Choosing to remain ignorant has its consequences.

The Dems could win on the health care issue alone. The GOP is counting on the short term memory of their constituents.

They're just the con that Donnie the Thug is infamous for; you just have to pay "cheap" rates and get nothing but a bill of goods. You might as well be uninsured.

With short-term plans, Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn) said the message is “you can pay less with less coverage and at least you will have some insurance.”

He actually said that.
