Warren releases results of DNA test
Source: The Boston Globe
WASHINGTON Senator Elizabeth Warren has released a DNA test that provides strong evidence she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations, an unprecedented move by one of the top possible contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.
Warren, whose claims to Native American blood have been mocked by President Trump and other Republicans, provided the test results to the Globe on Sunday in an effort to defuse questions about her ancestry that have persisted for years. She planned an elaborate rollout Monday of the results as she aimed for widespread attention.
The analysis of Warrens DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship, also known as a genius grant, for his work on tracking population migration via DNA analysis.
He concluded that the vast majority of Warrens ancestry is European, but he added that the results strongly support the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor.

I wonder if most people whose families go that far back in north America have traces of Native American ancestry.

(31,535 posts)Like Senator Warren, I have been told all my life that we had Native American ancestry. My dad and many other family members had facial features that looked Native American.
On a whim, my sister had a DNA test. Surprise, surprise! We are 97% Northern European and 3% sub-Saharan African.
I had always believed Senator Warren, but this revelation won't stop Trump's attacks and name calling.

(16,860 posts)My great-grandmother told me that her grandmother was Choctaw, so I guess I have about as much Indian ancestry as Sen. Warren. A lot of Americans have a little bit of Indian ancestry. Some have black ancestry and it was passed down in the family that it was Indian ancestry instead that accounted for some darker complexions and black hair. I really wonder about how accurate these tests really are. I'm glad Sen. Warren had it done, though. I would support her candidacy for President, and I think this test might shut some people down who try to call her a liar.

You can take further tests that show just what generation.

I know our family's history, of the Yoshida's coming to Hawaii to work in the Sugar Cane fields... and inter-marrying with real Native Hawaiians. People have told me I don't look Japanese and my skin is way too dark to be Japanese. They say, "Yeah, you look Asian, maybe you are Mongolian or something.." but No.. the name Yoshida is Japanese and my great Grandfather was a "Kahuna" .. and our family was shielded by Native Hawaiian's during World War II. None of my family were interned like other Japanese families. We may have been Yoshida, but we were Hawaiians too.. so no one in my family were ever interned during that period of time.

I like her voting record, but she's kind of boneheaded, campaign-wise, and would be a terrible candidate.
She also stupidly signed onto Donna Brazille's fanfic about the primaries being rigged, thinking it would win her Bernie or Bust points. It just made her look idiotic.
Warren isnt ready for primetime or a presidential campaign and would be eaten alive if she were the nominee.

Right now a lot of independents are turned off to Trump. However, will they view Warren as a far left liberal and tie her to someone like Pelosi??? I think she would definitely motivate the democratic base. However, do we need a voice like hers to remain in the senate fighting for us??? Then we all know Trump likes someone he can fight with and mock. He would enjoy going after Warren...And I dont want that @sshole to enjoy anything. Im really unsure about this one...

Just fyi, about her being told she's probably part Native American because of rumors & her high cheekbones: My family has been told that, too. But I saw a genealogy list on my family (done by a distant relative)...I didn't notice any Native American name in the list. But that's not DNA. It's genealogy, where people "report" the parents.

(14,178 posts)I'm in Canada. Maybe I'm ignorant of some American historical event that created some precedent about never admitting you have native blood in your family unless you are 100% sure of it. But I'm confused. What is the point of contention with Republicans?
Does this apply to other racial bloodlines? East Indian? Slavic? Asian? What does it matter, if you muse one day in some interview, that you have old passed down family stories that tell of a relationship by some great grandmother, with someone from another race? Does this just apply to native Americans?
I just don't get where the faux pas is:
Whether its in simply saying there are stories in your family that you have some other racial blood in your ancestry other than Caucasian,
Or if its that by saying this without actual proof, that its some kind of slight against REAL native Indians. (like they really care)
Or, I guess with racist Republicans, if they believe she MIGHT have Indian blood, which would make her "unpure".
I mean I can see perhaps a century ago, it might be detrimental to have a politician admit to having 'heathen native' blood in them. But you'd think in this day and age, it would almost be a point of pride. Is that it? Bragging? (Like Trumpublicans have a leg to stand on there).
Why is this such a big deal either way?
HockeyMom
(14,337 posts)My daughters had DNA testing as well, but people believe what they wanted to believe based on preconceived notions.
Examples? I got 40% Southern Italian. Younger daughter got 30%. I lived with my Maternal Great-Grandma as a child. She didn't know she immigrated from Italy? Yet,because my daughter is a blue eyed redhead people doubt she is of Italian heritage. My Paternal Great-Grandma immigrated from Ireland. I have documentation for that. How the genes play out.
On the other hand you can get surprises from DNA. I've also done my husband's genealogy. His Maternal side was Eastern European and his Grandpa was from Russia. Both he and my older daughter have dark hair and dark almond shaped eyes. Everyone asks both of them if they are Asian. My older daughter's DNA came up with 1% Asian. Can she claim to be part Asian now? Most people would not question that based solely on her physical appearance, unlike her younger sister's appearance. "You two are SISTERS?"
Yet. Trump says Warren isn't Native because she doesn't look Native? Appearances are just the luck of the total genetic draw.
