Virgil Goode makes presidential ballot in Virginia
Source: Washington Post
Former congressman Virgil Goode Jr. has qualified for the presidential ballot in Virginia, the State Board of Elections ruled Tuesday morning, adding a potential obstacle to Republican Mitt Romneys hopes of winning the pivotal state.
The state Republican party has already challenged the eligibility of Goode, who is the Constitution Partys nominee, and could still get him knocked off the ballot. Goode previously served in Congress as a Democrat, an Independent and then a Republican before losing his southwest Virginia seat in 2008.
Goode submitted more than 20,500 signatures to the elections board, far more than required. State law requires third-party candidates for president to submit 10,000 valid signatures, including at least 400 from each of Virginias 11 congressional districts. Goode got significant help collecting signatures from the Independent Green party, which assisted Goode because he supports the partys top issue more spending for passenger rail.
But the Virginia GOP filed a challenge last week arguing that too many of Goodes signatures are invalid. Republicans in Pennsylvania knocked Goode off the ballot in that state last month.

(1,693 posts)Forgive me for being dense, but since it says he has served before as a Dem, an Ind, and a Repub, could be potentially pull votes away from the President?

Of course, it would have been somewhat hypocritical for the "legitimate" Greens to do so. The fundamental principle here is that, in our two-party system, a ballot spot for a fringe party helps the major party that's less compatible with the fringe party's views. It make sense for Obama supporters to want Goode on the ballot, but if you recognize that, then you'd also recognize that having a Green candidate on the general-election ballot is a boon to Romney/Ryan.
